Re: Future releases
There's no doubt QT is weird. He's like the 10 year old boy behind you 3rd grade who constantly drew pictures of decapitations and blood. Like Tim Burton, John Waters, Steven King (pulling names at random) he has never quite grown up and sees through the eyes of a kid. He makes the movies he wants to, not what people tell him, and they're not always good. Actually they're mostly a mess!
But within them there are scenes that would stand alone that I think are as good as almost anything out there. The house search at the beginning of IB was great. (The rest I could have skipped.) The death of Bill at the end of Kill Bill 2. The scene between Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper in True Romance. That's just great writing!

Re: Future releases
It does look a bit reminiscent of Transformers, but it's made by a director who's proven that he's capable of making mature and thoughtful films, so I'm hopeful that Pacific Rim will be a big popcorn blockbuster done right.

If I hadnt known it was DelToro I would have assumed it was Transformers, the effects were so similar, big robots er, transforming and hitting monsters.

Re: Future releases
Back to Tarentino. As Dave said, you watch a Tarentino movie because there's always one or two transcendent scenes. He knows and loves movies as much as anyone on the planet, so with that much inspiration running around inside of him some transmutations will crystallize in his demented skull and you get a few minutes of true greatness. The main advantage of it coming from him is he's not gonna candy-coat it the way Spielberg did with everything except Schindler's list.
But I prefer his buddy Robert Rodriguez. Some of the same violent obsession, but it goes more like a finely choreographed dance in his hands, not a pure splatter fest. Desperado was a thing of beauty, then we got From Dusk to Dawn and Sin City.

Re: Future releases
I think both of those directors are best watched with a bunch of friends and a lot of beer.
I really enjoyed the Mariachi movies, but I haven't seen Sin City or anything later by RR, only because there's never happened to be the right combination of people and beer.

Re: Future releases
The first tableaux in Sin City I think is the best of the whole movie. Unforgettable. Stylistically Sin City was a jump in visualization the way Dark City was: the atmospherics just stick with you.
According to Rodriquez the only color that was untouched was the electric blue in Alexis Bleidel's eyes; he just couldn't see messing with such perfect beauty. Among all the artfully desaturated colors her eyes jump out at you like a beacon.

Those Eyes:
I remember them even brighter at times but can't find the screenshot I want.

Re: Future releases
cant wait to see Elysium, does anyone know when it opens? or has seen it.
love the way Matt Damons nose has evolved the more rugged the roles he gets. it used to be pert and piggy, now its straighter, it looks much better because its subtle.

Re: Future releases
Elysium will be out in August. I'm definitely looking forward to it. I loved Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting and the Bourne movies, and I really liked District 9, so my fingers are crossed that this is good too.

Re: Future releases
It's a Seth Rogen/James Franco/Jonah Hill/Danny McBride vehicle where they all play fictionalized versions of themselves. The concept and trailers all sounded pretty stupid and immature. I'm actually really surprised it's gotten such good reviews from both critics and audiences so far (tumblr posts notwithstanding) so I was considering seeing it.
Re: Future releases
me too although i don't think it's out here.. but i dunno... it seems stupid and i am not into stupid movies.
