Re: Future releases
There's not as much Cumberbatchiness in this new ST trailer, but I thought I'd post it anyway.
Re: Future releases
Ive been watching the original series of late- and was struck by how much more, nautical, it is- to which end stand by for a writing mishmash Ive been working on- Star Trek- Hornblower. (no seriously)

Re: Future releases
Joss Whedon, fresh from finishing Avengers -what does he do between films? Take a rest? Go on holiday? No he gets all his favourite mate actors round and shoots Shakespeares Much Ado About Nothing over 12 days in his own house.
I am really, really looking forward to this- I love his writing (Avengers excepted and Doll House as Ive not seen it yet) and his obvious love of words for their own sake and for their music- and him and Shakespeare should be dynamite (I have heard he regularly invites his actor friends round his house for drinks and Shakespeare readings- I'd love to be in on one of them).

Re: Future releases
I managed to see "Cloud Atlas" & I fooking loved it ! I mentioned in an earlier post. Thats deffo one to buy when I can ! I liked "Skyfall" but it wasnt spectacular. I do like Daniel Craig as Bond, I havnt read any of Ian Fleming's books but "Skyfall" seemed more of a trip to the confessional than the usual outrageous stunts & gadgets jaunt. I felt Daniel Craig makes Bond a believable, reachable human being. Hes very easily able to do the job but he does have a mans soul underneath. I did feel the role Judy Dench played was purile. Sloppy.lazy scripting. & her death was better suited to an afternoon TV rom-com. While J.Bardem played a WITTY villian, it wasnt a high calibre villian, also reminded me of "cyrus the virus" from Con Air. The chase scene with Bardem dressed as a copper (?) didnt do it for me at all !!

Re: Future releases
Cloud Atlas is high on my films I want to see list along with Life of PI.
And yeah the chase scene was pretty lame, just stretched the film out- and why is it when films go to Scotland they are all set on Rannoch Moor and Glencoe?- its ridiculous, there is the whole of the Highlands beyond that with ridiculously, achingly beautiful and stunning scenery and yet everything from Highlander to Bond shoots in the same one location.

Re: Future releases
I watched the trailer for Much Ado About Nothing and it does look really interesting! I'll have to check it out; hopefully it will get a wide theatrical release Stateside.
Re: Future releases
Hopefully the Joss Whedon name will mean it will get a proper distibution.

Re: Future releases
The "Much Ado About Nothing" trailer looks pretty good and I'm looking forward to it; but for me it'll be hard to watch it without thinking constantly about Kenneth Branagh in the 1993 film version

Re: Future releases
Hi Semiramis! I agree- I do love the Brannagh version- the two scenes where he and then Betrice overhear the set up is hysterical- most Ive ever laughed at a Shakespeare comedy- but Brannaghs is a very jolly (for the most part) exhuberent and traditional telling of the tale- I think this will be more contemporary and more film like if you know what I mean- much as I love Brannaghs Shakespeare films I sometimes feel he doent make as much use of the medium of film as he might- they are more like filmed stage plays sometimes (I particualry felt that with his version of Hamlet).

Re: Future releases
Brannagh knocked it out of the park with Henry V and Dead Again (yeah I know, not Shakespeare), and did as well as could be done with the weaker drama of Much Ado About Nothing. I'm a big fan of his - one critic referred to him as the only living actor who can make Shakespeare sound like street talk, which is a high complement.
I have to admit Mel Gibson's Hamlet worked better for me, despite the over acting. It was less turgid. I do wish Branagh would do Macbeth, or actually just keep doing any Shakespeare...his versions are more watchable than most.
Not Branagh, but I loved Midsummer's Night Dream with the likes of Callista Flockhart, Stanley Tucci, Rupert Everett. Nailed it. With Zeferelli's Romeo and Juliet the most approachable versions of Shakespeare put on film.

Re: Future releases
I think Henry V is his best Shakespeare, as the one that is most cinema- the later on in his career you go the more slavish he becomes to preserving every word of text.
I think this is a mistake with Shakespeare- there are two types of Shakespeare text that I think should be cut most if not all times-the first is asides that hinge entirely on the audience being aware of the reputation of people contemporary to their time- either you have to set it in the modern day and change it to people a modern audience will know- or leave it out- as even the most scholarly viewer will be lucky to know who many of the personalities of Elizabethean london and the joke/meaning being conveyed by them are.
The second sort is dialogue whose sole purpose is to make up for the fact every play is being performed in an aopen air theatre relying on daylight.
There are quite a lot of scene setting dialogue- 'the morn in russet mantle clad o'er yonder hill doth break'- is not necesary when you can show the sun rising, and theres a lot of that sort of thing- many scenes open with someone establishing the time of day in some fashion to 'set the scene'- you just dont need it in film.
I cant watch Gobsons Hamlet- he really obviously struggles with the dialogue in places, I can see him trying to act as I watch.
I agee on Midsummer Nights Dream- proving Americans can do Shakespeare!
I was not taken with Romeo and Julie but then its not a favourite play of mine so thats not a suprise.
Patrick Stewart in Macbeth is well worth a watch Halfwise if you havent seen it-
Superb Lady Macbeth too.
