those Phoenician ships have more than one deck. The boats shown don't look like they do. Okay for a small port but at some point we need to see a real ship.

{{ Agreed, they are no good if they are supposed to be the main fleet, and especially by time we get to Ar-Pharazon. But this looks like a trade port to me not a miltary one. And in the early days of Numenor interaction with the mainland was mainly peaceful and trade based so makes sense the bulk of vessels are for trade, and that theyd base them off the greatest Mediterrian sea traders the Phonecians. So on its own I dont mind this image except some of the folk in it, but that is caveated by this being a trade port only- if they are supposed to be miltary ships then yeah, its hardly the tall ships of Numenor which should probably be more similar to Galleons. }}

Yeah you're right that they are not "Tall ships", lacking multiple sails per mast, etc. etc.

These are advanced past Viking longships:
+Two masts
+Rudder
+A below-decks hold
+size

Assuming this is a trade port and not the main military harbour for military ships I dont mind this. Given Gondor is sort of Rome it makes some sense to take inspiration for their time of being a great trading power as somewhat Phonecian, the most famous sea going traders of the time of Rome. Its in line for me much as taking anglo-saxon design and giving it to the Rohirrim is.
The asian guy shouldnt be there, Numenor as far I recall did not trade with the Easterlings, however there probably oddly should be a few African faces about, as they were trading and taking tribute later from Harad- it amazes me they shoehorn in people of colour where they logically and sensibly should not be, and leave them out places where they plausibly should be. Mad }}
Trade ships need to load and unload cargo more than military ships do. Why is it sensible to have dinky docks here, but not in the "military port"? (As if there will be any distinction in the show to this level of detail.)

{{ Going on this image it appears to me that we are quite far out from the main docks, which are off in the background where the buildings are, and we cant clearly see that area at sea level, but it would make sense to have the main docks there for larger vessels and goods that require equipment- cranes, winches- to offload and where presumably the store and warehouses are. The area we see in detail is a good bit from there and it would be logical for smaller vessels to unload goods that can be moved by hand, or passengers, at smaller docksides.
And if you compare the vessels types that Rome had for its maritime exploits from trade to war its a vast array of sized vessels that would require all sorts of sized docks, harburs and quays to berth at-

https://www.romanports.org/en/articles/human-interest/786-roman-trading-ships.html

so for me there is not a lot about the boats and harbours we see here to stir the crabbit at this point (apart from the people who shouldnt logically be there). As this is only the first series it would make sense we are seeing Numenor in its peaceful earlier years before it turns to conquest and rule of ME, and so not the war fleets of later Numenor. Mind you that all depends on just how compressed the time frame is- as in the original its a long time from peaceful Numenor to its Fall. And you'd expect their maritime skills to increase and develop over that time frame culminating in the great tall ships of the last fleet. But this early on their ships should be less warlike, less technically impressive and lean towards trade. }}

{{ Well it will depend I think on how long a time frame series 1 covers. All we know is that it is compressed, by how much we dont know. But if the first series covers Numenor as benifactors to the men of ME, teachers and traders then we shouldnt see bigger docks or war vessels till they turn more to conquest and settlement later in their time line which with what, 5 series planned, could be at lest series 2. }}

This whole Galadriel-in-Numenor thing is really happening.

There is such a thing as over-pronunciation: when the delivery of a word passes over from a lived-in, believable delivery to something akin to poorly-done Shakespeare. Just saying.

Galadriel is introducing herself now as "Commander of the Armies of Gil-galad". Well! Laughing

What I usually see is people defending it by focusing on the good parts. These parts are not so large in number, of course, so some grasping is required. A recent "good part" about the show is that Cirdan has been confirmed to appear in the second season. The showrunners introduced this with the accompaniment that "he is so old that he has a beard!" {{ I think the scene where Galadriel introduces herself is a nice summing up of what this is going to be- Galadriel in a place she never went to, declaring herself head of army she was not involved in to a Queen she never met. A Queen who is the wrong race for her and Numenoreons description and who never made it to the throne and was never Queen anyway, and a character they've entirely made up. Not a jot of it is right not an idea, line or word that is Tolkiens.  Mad }}

Figgs is saying "pants" like "underwear" though.

It's disappointing that something like Numenor, which looks great from the brief glimpses we see, is going to be cheapen by all this other shit. At least for Tolkein fans.

I am sure those that don't know anything better will just take it as if it were all correct. And then they will bloody defend it like they did for those horrible Hobbit movies and that cluster-fuck of Game of Thrones series 7-8.

Somebody defended the Hobbit movies? Shocked I guess I was staying away from TORN in those dark years.

I'm currently doing a reread of ASOIAF, I suppose I should do a rewatch as well. There were some good moments even in the crappy seasons. Most involved The Hound.
