has the unintended effect of associating the name of Tolkien with social division instead of with his work. - Forest
{{ Yup I much preferred it when it was a good old fashioned crabbit rant about how PJ fucked up the books narrative because of choices in story, weak characterisations, action and spectacle over substance, dumming down of characters and plot elements, and of couse most importantly getting the grass wrong- you know actual stuff of substance and worth some crabbit. When its all about badly written unrealistic female acion heroes and race and social commentary shoehorned in where it so obviously doesnt belong and has no real narrative purpose its all so stupid, still makes me crabbit but in a sort of 'have we come to this' kind of way. Crabbit plus melancholy, like the feeling you get when you realise your next slug of buckie is the last in the bottle. }}

Holy crap. You'd think for the nearly billion dollars they spent they could have spared a little pocket change to hire a writer over the age of 14.

Re: Amazon, Warner Bros in Talks for LOTR Series Adaptation: Variety
I mean, it has some turns of phrase that I can appreciate. The problem is that I don't really understand it.
"Even stone cannot hide the mark of one whose very hand is flame unquenched."
Was Sauron known for having burning hot hands at this point in the stories? In the First Age it's all about his shape-changing and mastery of werewolves and such.
But even so, stone is not known for hiding marks. In fact, scratching on rock is an excellent way to leave a lasting message, as Gandalf does on Weathertop. Soft things like skin, wood, or leather leave no mark, it is true.
It's just an odd way to put it. And was this mark left by his hand? Because it looks more like it would be from scratches if anything.
I don't mean to be nitpicky. It's just that I was reading elsewhere some comments about how the rhythm of the delivery and the word choice were quite poetic and nice on the ears. I don't quite hear it, myself.

It's actually rather close to iambic tetrameter: "even STONE cannot HIDE the FLAME unQUENCHED." But it feels like kids trying to mimic Tolkien/Shakespeare. It's too obviously affected.

Re: Amazon, Warner Bros in Talks for LOTR Series Adaptation: Variety
{{ I felt much the same Halfy- it reminded me when people try to write 'Shakesperean' and its all "Gadzooks thou art the fairest maiden who dwellest upon the earth, who outshines even the greatest lights in all the Heavens'. I saw a few comments elsewhere that the use of 'unquenched' was very Tolkien. But it feels like its trying to be Tolkien in the same way sticking, 'thou or art' in a sentence doesn't make it Shakesperean, it doesn't run like a Tolkien line (mainly as the actual subject matter under discussion is stupid)- if you want to know if you're getting Tolkien's style, read it out loud, Tolkien wrote his tales to be told in my view- and he tells them best-
When she says that line out loud, nope its not Tolkiens standard.
And was this mark left by his hand?- Forest
Putting aside the fiery hand at all- no reason for that he can shapechange as you say, appears fair during this period, and when Gollum says he has only 9 fingers there is no impresison its not on a normal hand, but that all aside why would his hand leave a mark that looks like the Eye?! That'd be a bit inconvienent if youve got an itchy nose and end up branding your face with a flaming eyeball!}}

Egads! 'Tis no vasty beast of horn and hide that this way comes, trumpeting the air and shivering the leaves, but a drunken Scot: one "Petty Crabbithead" by name. Best we serve ourselves out of his way, lest we be served by him a tirade most wearisome and inbrevitous!

Perhaps within the context of the show it will flow more pleasingly. One can hope!halfwise wrote:It's actually rather close to iambic tetrameter: "even STONE cannot HIDE the FLAME unQUENCHED." But it feels like kids trying to mimic Tolkien/Shakespeare. It's too obviously affected.

At the end of the day you still get a swift boot and a crabbit explosion!
The interviews that Nomvete are doing for RoP are making it impossible to accept her casting as anything but politically motivated.
Edit, oops, never mind, wrong interview! Or rather I think the clip I was referring to was from another part of this same interview.

For someone who claims no plans to watch, you've got an inordinate interest in the interviews surrounding it.

I don't see a proper tall ship. What they've got is a bit small for the boats shown, but the boats shown aren't far beyond Viking technology.

{{ They remind me of Phonecian trade ships, especially the upcurved prows-
which makes some sense as inspiration given Numenor would have been trading and eventually just taking tribute from the mainland. Assuming this is a trade port and not the main military harbour for military ships I dont mind this. Given Gondor is sort of Rome it makes some sense to take inspiration for their time of being a great trading power as somewhat Phonecian, the most famous sea going traders of the time of Rome. Its in line for me much as taking anglo-saxon design and giving it to the Rohirrim is.
The asian guy shouldnt be there, Numenor as far I recall did not trade with the Easterlings, however there probably oddly should be a few African faces about, as they were trading and taking tribute later from Harad- it amazes me they shoehorn in people of colour where they logically and sensibly should not be, and leave them out places where they plausibly should be. }}
