Yeah, it's that bad. But if you're in a mood to mock something, it might be worth a go. It's like they wanted to take the boats from Kirk Douglas' "The Vikings" and rip off all the Ray Harryhausen "Sinbad" movies but didn't have the budget for the monsters.

Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
Its so close and yet so far. Such a shame, but Bag End has a large garden, it doesn't. Its barely got a garden at all. Where are the potatoes planted? Bilbo leaves the Gaffer sacks of them from the garden (knowing Bilbos sense of humour probably because taking a few potatoes home after a days work was a perk of the job for the Gaffer!). Bag End has vegetable gardens, herb gardens, lots of flower beds, neatly mowed lawns- not some bit of scrappy hillside.

Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
The point is not that they should have been growing spuds Mrs Figg! Its that they designed Bag End, famous for its garden requiring at any time a minimum of 2 gardeners to maintain, including one main character, with no garden to speak of at all. Its Bag End, its a country manor built by a wealthy well-to-do hobbit. It should have neat trimmed lawns and hedges etc not a bit of scrappy hillside that looks more than half like mud.

Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
Probably didn't want to alienate people who don't like vegetables (that's me) but maybe's there's a scene with Bilbo growing food via hydroponics in a massive greenhouse which is obviously much more efficient at growing and can resist diseases (PJ's clever like this) and would obviously help increase food production sustainably in The Shire? Maybe?

Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
Is it just me, or do these new Shire pics look much more trimmed and domesticated than the shaggy Shire of LOTR?
And yes, they're all gorgeous. If I can ever afford to go to New Zealand I'm taking one of those Hobbit tours.

Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
I think it looks mostly the same, but I tink this one is after they .. dunno what it is in english, but ooH! I remember! after harwest sort of. so it seems more trimmed
Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
Sorry but it just looks ok. The greens wrong, the light is wrong, the type of grass is wrong, the trees are wrong and the lack of 'english' gardens wrong.
If they had shot the Shire in rural England, in the sort of setting Tolkien grow up in and was envisioning when he wrote aboutthe Shire and you had a pic of that for comparison to this- I have no doubt the english one would be hundred times better and closer in look and feel to the book.

yeah, but I don't, and I have not grown up with some mental picture of rural england, so when I read LOTR and TH I pictured something like this. at least not rural england, cause I had no idea of it.
Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
Daft though this sounds the waters wrong too! Colour is too intense for what you get to my eyes

And this is the problem for me, I did grow up in the rolling hills of the yorkshire dales, not actually the landscape Tolkien was imagining, but a lot closer than NZ

Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
I know I can't put in gardens and stuff for you petty, but are the colours better now?
- Spoiler:
Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
A tad, vivid there Norc maybe?
Its not the colouring as such, they altered the hell out of it in post, its to do withthe latitud eon the planet, the quality of light is different- thats why Hollywood is where it is- the lights good there for making films. But everywhere has its own distinct look that way.
For example if you watch the classic 80's tv show Robin of Sherwood, shot entirely on location, and then watch the recent BBC Robin Hood, shot in ome cheap east European country somewhere- its immediately apprent which one was shot in England just from the difference in sunlight.
Its hard to explain but when you see the difference it its obvious.
And to sort out PJ's everything needs to be less wild looking, less overgrown. Hobbits love order not chaos. A repectable Baggins would be ashamed of that garden.

Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
sorry you lost me at sherwood.. just kidding xD
no, i see what you mean, and I fully understand what you mean about different lighting. this is an extreme example, but if you are to shoot eveningscenes in around the ecvator and so is impossible because the sunset lasts under 20 minutes, so it ends up looking fake because it well, you understand, but here the sunset takes almost two hours (or more or never going down depends on time of year) and that gives it a special light and which is distinct for that place. But I must point out that okay, maybe the shire would've gone better filming in england, but the rest needs a much more untamed, untouched and raw feeling and england unfortunately, doesn't have that anymore. So to jump half the earth to make a movie? meeeh... maybe not. And for all the other ... ten billions of people in the world who doesn't live in england (or scottland) don't have this mental picture of rural england which tolkien describes as the shire, but a shire with hints of that but mostly influenced by what old, rural landscape looks in their region, therefor it isn't such a big problem that the new-zealand ADPATION doesn't have gardens and so on.
if they were to shoot the Hobbit anywere, they should have come here. period.

Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
Thing is becasue thats the landscape Tolkien was describing- if you see the Shire in the place Tolkien himself was imaginiang it it would have just felt right becasue it would have meshed perfectly with the description- more so than PJ's (which is a good effort in most apsects-excepts the gardenr and overgrownness-its just in the wrong place).
As to shooting internationally- I dont think you can do ME justice unless you do. And why not? Bond films have been shooting all round the world in every Bond film for decades.

mnjeeeeeh... probably. but still, for me who had no idea of rural english landscape until long after I'de read/listen to both and made my own image, I'm quite fine with that. It looks a bit like here.. only less mountain (in the shire.)
Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
This is the sort of countryside Tolkien grew up in and he was thinking of when he wrote about the Shire.

Let me suggest that, because potatoes seem so central to the Shire culture, the proper location for the Shire should certainly be South America.
Everybody knows that potatoes weren't brought to England until the 17th century, and then only as fodder for farm animals and Irishmen.
Potatoes didn't enter the normal English diet until the 19th century, so clearly Sam and Frodo were much more likely Peruvian!
(or is it Eruvian? I can never keep those two straight..... )
