Re: Music [3]
Been listening to a fair bit of Traffic lately. One of many bands I have fond memories of discovering in my dad's CD collection.
Re: Music [3]
Jethro Tull is another band like that. Ian Anderson wasn't quite as weird and twitchy anymore when I saw him perform in 2009, though he was still a great performer.

Re: Music [3]
I've been listening to entirely too much Epic Rap Battles of History recently. They have a really good mix of technical skills and clever punchlines though.

Re: Music [3]
OK... so the BBC website has suggested 6 pieces of classical music that it assures one of which will touch my soul.
I don't think I have a soul so going to try it out!
First is the Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Re: Music [3]
Good luck with that one Lance Its always the same pieces of music put up & you hear it so often that it becomes a bloody nuisance. Be interesting if you find one tho

Re: Music [3]
Well... that one was a bit lengthy given the content. Janice Jansen was the soloist and she was great... but about half way through I lost interest as it got a bit bland for me.
On to the next one... Cello Concerto in B Minor by Antonin Dvorak.
Good luck Antonin.

Re: Music [3]
Well... I don't have a soul. That much is clear already.
Cello soloist in the version I just listened to was great but I don't get how noodling over the same idea for 40 mins can work. 10 mins in I was done but listened to 20... then skipped a few bits to hear the same theme again... and again.
Need a break from that before I get to the other 4.

Re: Music [3]
No, its not the Paramount intro, there are better versions of this tune, as to the mountain itself..........?

Re: Music [3]
There needs to be at least one more electric guitar for that to really work. two decked-out electric guitars in full metal regalia playing off each other, facing down licks and riffs from each other, that would do it.

Re: Music [3]
That is very awesome!
There's a whole New England tradition of full throated sea shanties, clearly with British inspiration but I wonder how much they diverged from the original source? Is there the equivalent in the british isles maritime tradition or is this a strongly American branch of music? I really don't know, and it perturbs me that I don't know.

Re: Music [3]
Wikipedia has a wonderful write up on sea shanties, which do indeed seem to be a particularly American branch of music, one we can be proud of.

Re: Music [3]
I like that Hes got a great voice & even if you were a bit shy you couldnt help but join in, I love that "lets come together" atmosphere That vid is particularly great I guess back in the Olde Days every nationality had shanty's. Being stuck at sea for months you would have needed something to perk your spirits up or you'de go crazy I would have thought ? The sea is a terrible world when it wants to be, frightening & awesome. The food might have been crap & the illnesses, sea sickness ? What is there to do on a long voyage ?
