Re: Doctor Who [11]
It's more a Holy Mother(hood) thing, not so much the virgin bit. The mother appears as saintly, chaste, graceful, kind, patient, never flirting or swearing or mocking- Amarie
She iss a middle class housewife from the 1940's they weren't known for obviously swearing in front of their children. And if she was in any way flirty or mocking folk like you and Figg would be all up in arms at another Moffat bal breaking femme fatale ect ect.
This is what I mean when I say Moffat cant win with you two- he casts more women and gives more behind the scenes jobs to women (than at any other time in the shows 50 year history I might add) he is sexist, he doesnt do it, he's sexist. He writes in as cannon that Time Lords can change gender and then changes the gender of the 2nd most famous and important Timelord next to the Doctor and he is sexist for not making the Doctor a woman!
He writes a strong female character who is in control and domineering he is writing sexist tropes, he writes a 1940's housewife who is still strong but not controlling or domineering and he is sexist and writing tropes.
I don't get it.
Nor would I describe Madge as saintly- she pulls a gun on the three drivers.
She snaps at her children, which upsets her, and she is trying to deal with her own grief as well as the pain she knows is about to come to her children. I don't think that she does so with dignity makes her saintly or a virgin Madonna of some sort- that just seems weird to me.
And I don't think putting Amy in white equates her with the Madonna (pale blue is the traditional colour there if that's what Moff was going for- and if it was it would be there, as the Red Riding Hood metaphor in the Angels two parter demonstrates, the costume dept aren't afraid to help make the point).
And her baby isn't divine- it was conceived whilst the TARDIS was in flight- and it was exposure to the vortex which caused the original DNA alterations in Gallifreyeans creating the Time Lords- River has had that process artificially accelerated yes, but its science not religion- though not without some religious aspects as its carried out by a religious group, done against her will by force and in terms of their aims is an complete failure- so if there is any equating to religion its a continuation of a critic of religious thought and actions that comes up over and over in Moffats writing about religious institutions (this is often balanced though- the two marines are nice fellows, as Father Octavian whose nobility and bravery all stem from his faith.
So even on religion Moffat presents us with different aspects.
Azriel- the phrase River uses is much nicer 'child of the TARDIS'

Re: Doctor Who [11]
I doubt anyone can out grandstand 10 Figg!
But I think the point is to emphasis what Moffat has been saying of late- that at the start of this series the Doctor and Clara are just having fun, enjoying the adventurers and being with each other, all issues between them finally resolved.
Something I note you have been asking for, you have often complained in Moffat era there isn't enough of them just having fun.
Amarie- not sure what your Missy complaint is about, she was in the last trailer too so its not new, and the Master involved with the Daleks- bring that on. (And Moffat said he gone back and rewatched all the Delgado era Master interacting with the 3rd Doctor, so any reflection of that would be excellent) And did you notice there are lots of different Daleks together- the Emperor Dalek, classic 1st and 2nd Doctor era Daleks, Time War Daleks and Dalek supremes. We might actually be getting a proper meaty Dalek story after they were beefed back up into killing machines last series.
I am not sure who you are referring to with the Larva man thing.
Azriel- me too!

Re: Doctor Who [11]
trailer stills to ponder!
First up monsters! (there's so many!)
Shades of Fenric? New variety of Sea Devil? Or something new?
No idea but it seems to have pissed the Doctor off a mite bit
Zygon!
Daleks of all eras and colours, oh my!
Here be Dragons! (Viking sea serpent?)
Steampunk Vikings?
Hellraiser!
Eye, thats handy! (that joke only works in Scots!)
Cat People!
Eating curry!
The Doctor being cool as fuck!
And giving peace signs to UNIT whilst wearing shades!
Miscellaneous
Lots of things launching from a city, increasingly looking to be Skaro back in the day
Where and when is this? (it doesn't look like its supposed to be a UK place, remembering the TARDIS translates signs and other stuff for crew members)

Those people with the eyes in their Hands...wasn't there something similar in The Fires of Pompei episode? Hmm those rumours may have been on to something...
Looks promising, but I agree with Figgs' grandstanding comment, Who is a silly show at its heart and I don't really agree with darkness for the sake of darkness...

there. changed that for you.
thing is, 10 did it with charm and style. Capaldi isn't charming, he is cold and stagey.
But I think the point is to emphasis what Moffat has been saying of late- that at the start of this series the Doctor and Clara are just having fun, enjoying the adventurers and being with each other, all issues between them finally resolved.
that's because the Impossible Girl shtick has run its course and they haven't anything interesting to take its place, seeing as they didn't give Clara a personality outside a Doctor obsession.
Something I note you have been asking for, you have often complained in Moffat era there isn't enough of them just having fun.
never said that. you made that up to suit.
Amarie- not sure what your Missy complaint is about,
she exists is enough to complain about. she is comedy villain dull with zero nuance.

Re: Doctor Who [11]
I like the "Master" to be a charming villain, about as trust worthy as a box of snakes. And the only one able to do that is a male baddie. Female baddies are just sarcastic, bitchy & prematurely smug. You know full well they will get out done &, cue the astonished fake surprise face. IMO

They don't have to be, Gomez is a talented enough actress he could have played the role completely straight, but Moffat followed RTD in making the Master into a bat sh*t crazy raving loony, rather than a camp but calculating moriaty.
Really wish the Charles Dance rumours turned out to be true...

Yeah, Agreeing with Azriel and Malick.
Moffat's Moriarty was a bit bat shit
The larva thing is a Zygon. Forgot what is was called.
"she exists is enough to complain about. she is comedy villain dull with zero nuance."
Yeah, that just about sums it up.

yep Simms was bat shit crazy, but he was also cool and in control, and he was very scary as you never knew which you were getting. Gomez just plays the master as rolling-eyed nutter, its boring its got no depth, and its not scary. I prefer a male Master, it makes for a interesting love hate relationship.

Me too Az, very promising indeed. And I love the film look this series seems to have.
'wasn't there something similar in The Fires of Pompei episode?'- Malick
Yup there was indeed but they were just painted on.
'I don't really agree with darkness for the sake of darkness...'
Its less dark I'd say than it was under RTd- under RTD he was guilty of genocide of hisown people, under Moffat he saved the day.
'Capaldi isn't charming, he is cold and stagey.'- Figg
Couldn't disagree more- loving Capaldi as the Doctor, everything I'd hoped for and more, and I suspect more to come.
'never said that. you made that up to suit. '
Cant be arsed going hunting through hundreds of pages to find it but yes you did, and more than once, particularly in relation to the Pond era.
'she exists is enough to complain about.'
Yup that about sums your view Id say, judgement first.
'Moffat followed RTD in making the Master into a bat sh*t crazy raving loony, rather than a camp but calculating moriaty.'- Malick
I thin he toned her down from RTD era, and fortunately seems to have dumped all that awful retro-injected drum nonsense.
Also its worth remembering that we only see any extended time of Missy for less than one and half episodes- before that she only features in short segments, often less than a minute short- so Id say its way to early to judge how her character will be and relationship with the Doctor.
'I prefer a male Master, it makes for a interesting love hate relationship.'- Figg
oh Figg you kill me sometimes, that's the funniest thing I've read all day. Brilliant! That made my day!

Re: Doctor Who [11]
Blogs as something of interest fine (same with Who vids for that matter)- blogs as a point of debate in the middle of a debate is what I bridle at Az- its using a proxy, someone elses words, someone not here to get crabbit with and what's the point in that.
And yup- have to keep a keen eye out for Moffats blatant sexism this series!

Nope! Still wrong.
Blogs are blogs.
Logs are logs.
Blogs are made of words and snark
and logs consist of wood and bark.

And now there was nothing but the roofs of houses, sweeping along like a great torrent of stones and rocks. Chimney-pots fell, and tiles flew from the roofs..."

Re: Doctor Who [11]
Forest- some channeling competition for Wisey!
Love these guys, the world needs more puppet commentators!
One thing you get to see when watching Who reaction stuff is the broad church of ages and sexes Who captures- from the young-
to the not so young any more-
And those of us who are a little longer in the tooth-
And the rnge of nationalities is quite impressive too, with reactions vids from all over the place form NZ to Canada and most places in between.
Talking Canada. it and the US have now been joined for some odd reason by Holland as places showing last series finale in cinemas in 3D. An the bluray of the 3D version is available in North America shortly afterwards- no news yet on a European release of that or if the US version is region free.
