I may have spoken hastily about not getting my barrel scrubbed! (as every Scots lad knows a lass tugging on your kilt can only mean one thing- she wants to come back to your place and scrub your barrel for you It'll be nice to have it clean again )

I've tried to de-clutter the forum at times before but The Silmarillion board isn't exactly overflowing with active threads at this point, and this thread was around for 2.5 years before the Tolkien news thread anyway, so I'd personally rather not get rid of it.

Thats not good enough ! Your'e slipping ! "One" starts ON topic & very quickly the thread descends into something completely unrecognisable & WAY off the original subject thus making the topic nil & void !

And of course I was referring to the debate due to the claim that Gandalf the "grey" actually wore "white" due to his having trained horses in Aman.
I think that was the gist of it anyway.

So does that mean Saruman was secretly training many-coloured horses!

Re: Tolkien in General
There were two "sea blue" wizards yes, in 1954... until Tolkien noted later (in a letter) that he didn't know their colours, and doubted thay had distinctive colours.
So when Peter Jackson trampled on copyright to note this blueness in The Hobbit, he forgot to trample again on not having the rights to The Letters of JRR Tolkien too.
Of course the Blue Wizards are such a "popular given" in Tolkien-dom that my pointing this out is often met with eye rolls, mostly from blue-eyed folk but some who are brown or grey-eyed too (grey-eyed means white-eyed in horses, I guess).
Anyway, to get back on topic. Robert Powell had blue eyes in his portrayal of Jesus. He auditioned for Judas but Franco Z. wanted the best eyes to go to Jesus.

To be more precise, his eyes weren't truly blue, they only appeared blue.
Blue Eyes, Wikipedia wrote:There is no blue pigmentation either in the iris or in the ocular fluid. Dissection reveals that the iris pigment epithelium is brownish black due to the presence of melanin. Unlike brown eyes, blue eyes have low concentrations of melanin in the stroma of the iris, which lies in front of the dark epithelium. Longer wavelengths of light tend to be absorbed by the dark underlying epithelium, while shorter wavelengths are reflected and undergo Rayleigh scattering in the turbid medium of the stroma. This is the same frequency-dependence of scattering that accounts for the blue appearance of the sky. The result is a "Tyndall blue" structural color that varies with external lighting conditions.

Re: Tolkien in General
Hmm...Rayleigh scattering allows red through with more scattering of blue. This explains the red eyes in pictures as light goes directly in and out in the same direction, but blue eyes must come from an off angle light source, and would change with light direction. Would blue eyes thus look redder in a camera flash since there is less absorption?
Where does the mottling come from? Changes in the absorption at the back of the eye? I have green eyes...what explains green eyes?

azriel wrote:My eyes are grey
Of course you mean they appear grey. They're actually brownish black like eyes that appear blue.
Like blue eyes, gray eyes have a dark epithelium at the back of the iris and a relatively clear stroma at the front. One possible explanation for the difference in the appearance of gray and blue eyes is that gray eyes have larger deposits of collagen in the stroma, so that the light that is reflected from the epithelium undergoes Mie scattering (which is not strongly frequency-dependent) rather than Rayleigh scattering (in which shorter wavelengths of light are scattered more). This would be analogous to the change in the color of the sky, from the blue given by the Rayleigh scattering of sunlight by small gas molecules when the sky is clear, to the gray caused by Mie scattering of large water droplets when the sky is cloudy.

halfwise wrote: I have green eyes...what explains green eyes?
As in the case of blue eyes, the color of green eyes does not result simply from the pigmentation of the iris. Rather, its appearance is caused by the combination of an amber or light brown pigmentation of the stroma, given by a low or moderate concentration of melanin, with the blue tone imparted by the Rayleigh scattering of the reflected light.

Bluebottle wrote:But then what is colour other than what we see?
Colour actually seems to be many other things than what we see. Let me ask you this Blue (if you really ARE Blue ): supposing your eyes appeared blue in sunlight, would they still retain any of that quality on a dark night, or would they have turned black?

Re: Tolkien in General
Well, I guess it comes down to your definition of colour. If you think of color as something subjective, as a process of perception in the brain, then eyes are blue. As is the sky. If you rather consider colour as something objective, as in outside the brain and human perception, I guess you can begin to talk about the limits of perception and things real colour. That still necessitates the choice of definition though. Which was kind of my point.

Re: Tolkien in General
Don't you think though that there is also a general understanding of colour as an ideal to which individual perceptions are compared, which is both objective in the sense " outside the brain and human perception" and subjective in the sense that it varies wildly from culture to culture.

As evidence I present Exhibit A:
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/nov/24/prince-purple-rain-remake-niger-sahel-sounds
Purple Rain, Prince’s self-mythologising rock opera based loosely on his own journey to stardom, has been remade in the Saharan state of Niger – where few in the Tuareg community have ever heard of the musician, and there is no word for purple. [ ]
....
And the fact there is no Tuareg word for purple means the film is saddled with the title Akounak Tedalat Taha Tazoughai, which translates as Rain the Colour of Blue With a Little Red in It.
