Re: Tolkien in General
Isn't that more a question of classification/semantics though?

As opposed to what? Colour is a classification system after all.

Yeah, I guess I would say that's a difference in classification, not perception.

Re: Tolkien in General
It's a good question how much our mental classification affects perception. Take the fact that people of one language group often can't even hear differences in sounds that are fundamental to other language groups, or we don't realize how a vowel sound permutates depending on the word it's in. Same with color, which permutates depending on the surrounding colors.
But going back to the fundamentals of color, there's physical color which would be classified by the wavelength of light, then the physiologically identical color that comes from mixing two different wavelengths, like the purple being a combination of red and blue mentioned above. Or yellow being a mixture of red and green (additive colors, not subtractive like paint). Our brain is doing so much behind the scenes.

So what do you think of Blum's book, Elthir? And more importantly, does it happen to mention what brand of eyeliner Jesus wore? {"Dark Blue" varies so much from brand to brand you know. }Elthir wrote:"A dark blue eyeliner was applied on set to accentuate Powell's blue eyes" [Blum, Edward J.; Harvey, Paul (2012). I knew someone who heard colors. She also had perfect pitch, and every pitch was a different color to her. She couldn't stand listening to anything not tuned to concert pitch: I have to wonder what colors it made her see, or if she just grayed them all out.

Yep, and that last word is mithroch (pronounce -ch as in German ach, and think mith as in Sindarin for "grey").

My sister-in-law is a pretty big Tolkien fan, so I got her this book for Christmas. I was paging through it while I was in Barnes and Nobel yesterday, and I'm kinda wishing I had bought one for myself too. I'm going to peruse through it again before I wrap it, but what I've seen so far is really impressive. This includes all of Tolkien's art, maps, and calligraphy during his time writing Lord of the Rings. I'm currently look at 8 illustrations showing the evolution of the inscription on the One Ring from first manuscript to final publication.
The commentary accompanying each set of images is well written and researched. The entire book is about 240 pages in length, and while I'm only about 30 pages in I can tell this would be a great purchase for any Tolkien fan on your Christmas list or for yourself.

Re: Tolkien in General
I have that book, and highly recommend it! What's interesting is they go into all the backstory behind it - where Tolkien was in life, etc. As good to read as it is to look at.

Re: Tolkien in General
I flipped through it as well. Another quality Hammond & Scull book, but I wasn't prepared to spend that much on it. I do have a couple of other Tolkien-related books on my Christmas list though.
Re: Tolkien in General
Yeah it was a bit much, and I bought The Art of The Force Awakens for my brother. My wallet was like but I'm trying to get away from buying gift cards, at least for this year.
