Yeah, it's hard for me to get too. Maybe he really wanted to be like the Star Wars prequels, where the final film had a higher rating than the previous five.
malickfan wrote:Does R equate to a 15 or an 18 in the UK?
I can barely remember the movie, but this seems to indicate Jackson is going braindead with the gore...
Lol, "Braindead".
R means no admittance under 17 without an accompanying adult. It's the next step up from PG-13. The only higher rating is NC-17 (formerly known as X), which means no one 17 or under allowed at all, and is generally considered the kiss of death since many theatres and stores refuse to sell such movies.

Thanks for clearing that up, so basically he's aiming for the type of dumb violent blockbuster 15 year olds drag their parents to, to try and appear hip?
And I love Braindead

Re: Battle of the Five Armies - Extended Edition
RATED R??!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!!!
HOW?
Hunger Games, an infinitely more gruesome book, didn't even warrant an R rating, yet a CLASSIC CHILDREN'S STORY does????? IN WHAT UNIVERSE?!?!?! WHERE ARE WE RIGHT NOW???
I'm hoping that's just a rumor. It has to be! PJ's target audience wouldn't even be able to get in!

Re: Battle of the Five Armies - Extended Edition
there was a lot of talk about the 125 pages of the Appendices, or "Tolkien's extended Hobbit notes"- Eldo
I'd say the difference this time was that anyone who know the books at all knew immediately they were talking shit- that the amount of pages versus the actual material didn't add up ect
IN WHAT UNIVERSE?!?!?! WHERE ARE WE RIGHT NOW???- Tin
It is weird as hell- who would ever have thought that a film adaptation of TH would end up with an R rating? Its mind-boggling. We seem to have fallen down the wrong trouser leg of time into one where TH book is an adults only gore fest.

If TH films were made as an adults only gore fest from the start they may at least have had a clear tone, and a director enthused about the source material, expecting faery and subtlety from the guy behind Braindead was doomed from the start
Rankin Bass's effort is looking better and better with each passing day
I still maintain this is the perfect adaptation of the book:

I ran out of enthusiasm about five minutes into FotR (I mean what hope is there when they cant even get something as simple as the grass colour right )

Got to agree, certainly in that format its damn near perfect (some of the text is a little crushed in the space would be my only complaint) but the three parts of that sit proudly on my shelf.
