If that makes you homesick the pile of ice at the bottom of your drink probably has the same effect.

Re: The road goes ever on and on - A Travel Thread
Sorry for the delay with pictures and stuff! I've been home for about a week, but I'm waiting for my travelling companion to return from Australia so I can get the pics she took as well. There will be a small report, though, just have to get those pics first!

Okay, So I think I'm going to Italy in early May, and could arrange for very little extra to stop by London on the way back. What are the chances of me meeting someone? Because if not I may say screw it and go through Istanbul or something instead. (that would cost more, but I do have a hankering to see Istanbul)

Re: The road goes ever on and on - A Travel Thread
So now for certain I'll be in Rome the second week of April. I may do some independent driving the middle of the work week, in which case Venice is way up there. Rental cars are ridiculously cheap in Italy. I suppose the fuel isn't, though.

{{I wouldn't worry about the fuel Halfy- not when you have all those Italians around you 'driving' (for want of a better word) hope you're good on the horn and gesticulating wildly }}}

Took turns driving through Italy once with a friend. The cities are certainly terrifying, but the country is okay so long as you don't make the mistake of thinking you can pull off on the side of the road because folks don't drive there.

I love Thor Heyerdahl, even if he's completely wrong.

Re: The road goes ever on and on - A Travel Thread
Well, clearly in certain things, like the easter islanders. But his Kon Tiki expedition was as interesting as it was because it showed the feasability of travel from South America to Polynesia with the technology of the time. And as far as the possibility of communication between ancient cultures are concerned, I don't think anything is ultimately decided.
Just look at stories like this, which directly challenges the prevailing paradigms:

I think his work served a major scientific purpose, but he did have a tendency to jump to romantic conclusions. I still recommend his books even if you have to be careful to view his thesis with a hefty helping of salt.
