Re: A Song of Ice and Fire [2]
At the end of ADWDs That's a Barristan one, isn't it?
I get that you feel like holding off, Ringo. I've certainly not read all of them. But if you are going to read one more, I would suggest the Theon one. Rather than spoil anything, it just made me a lot more interested in how that storyline will turn out. That was my experience anyway.
Also, I think you'll really like it.

Yup, Barristan chapter. Sounds tempting, but I think I'll pass - I'd rather enjoy it when I can turn a page and start reading the next chapter

Yeah, I understand.
You have to promise to tell me what you think of those two chapters when you get around to reading the book though.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire [2]
Quite good bit about the Dornish and the Martells during Aegons conquest from the upcoming World of Ice and Fire.
And as a result the Dornish remained independent from the then 6 other kingdoms, only joining as the 7th through a marraige alliance more than a hundred years later.
Rhaneys would journey to Dorne but would find keep after keep empty except for women and children. When asked where the men went, the Dornish would just reply "away". She would finally journey to Sunspear and would only find the Princess of Dorne, Mirram Martell. She was 80, fat, blind, and almost bald. Argilac the Arrogant, the Storm King at the time of Aegons conquest, would call her the "Yellow Toad of Dorne". Mirram would tell Rhaenys that she would not fight nor kneel. She told her to leave and return at her peril. Rhaenys warned that if she left, she would return with fire and blood. Mirram answered with words of House Martell. Unbowed, unbent, unbroken.
And as a result the Dornish remained independent from the then 6 other kingdoms, only joining as the 7th through a marraige alliance more than a hundred years later.

Well.. it's Game of Thrones. They need to keep the boob count up, even when the characters are clothed.

Reminds me of that John Bradley thing at Comic Con.
"The good thing about me and male nudity is that everyone is served as it will still get the boob count up. "

I guess LOTR had Leggy stunts, and Game of Thrones has sexuality. Pandering finds a way...

Read that as "David Bradley" and was really confused for a minute.
Re: A Song of Ice and Fire [2]
I don't... think we need to see that.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire [2]
- Spoiler:
- Is that Hizdahr zo Loraq next to Dany in the Eowyn dress? Either way, the presence of Tyrion indicates another really major change to the plot, along with the Jaime in Dorne storyline. I wonder how different the Battle of Meereen will be. I don't think they'd cut that out entirely.
And ... Jorah in Daznak's pit? I guess TV!Jorah will succeed at bringing Tyrion to Dany. Whether he wins back her affection remains to be seen.
Re: A Song of Ice and Fire [2]
- Spoiler:
- Yupp.
Yeah, it does hint at some major deviaton. There will be a lot of them this coming season, no Griffs (probably), no Quentyn or Arrianne, Greyjoys very doubtful. I saw someone theorize that there will be no Battle of Mereen at all, that they will focus on the Sons of the Harpy and internal conflicts. Yezzan, the slave owner who buys Jorah and Tyrion in the books, is aparently Mereenese in the show. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Battle of Ice is apparently going ahead though.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire [2]
- Spoiler:
- One of the downsides of the show beginning to overtake the book is that even when it diverges from the source material, it's still a potential spoiler. Like, if they cut the Griffs, then Aegon VI probably doesn't feature too majorly in Martin's vague endgame that he told D&D about, and probably isn't actually Rhaegar's son.
The Greyjoy stuff was some of the most boring in AFFC so I won't mourn their loss. Glad they're focusing more on Dorne; I wonder if they always planned that or made the decision after Oberyn became a fan-favorite on the TV show as well as in the books.
Re: A Song of Ice and Fire [2]
- Spoiler:
- Yeah, though I think George has hinted heavily at a second Dance of the Dragons. So, I'm guessing he will play some kind of role, if not necessarily in the endgame. That was one interesting thing about reading the Wheel of Time series, you suddenly got to read a Last Battle, it's so often only hinted at as a part of the wider mythology. So, I'll be interested to see how George handle it.
The whole ADWDs AFFCs is pretty much one long travel sequence without a proper end, so I can see why they'll try to shorten it, but as things look to be heading some of Georges best writing in those two books seem to be left by the wayside. Which is a shame. And the continued insistence on a seven season structure seems a bit silly if they must cut so much.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire [2]
- Spoiler:
- The seventh season will probably be aired in two chunks, so it'll be closer to eight seasons/80 episodes in all likelihood. I don't think this is necessarily a bad thing because epic fantasy creep is ugly, although I'm sure there will be individual elements that I'll miss, too.
It's interesting that you mention the Dance of the Dragons. I just picked up a paperback copy of Dangerous Women, GRRM and Gardner Dozois' anthology that includes "The Princess and the Queen", which is a historical account of the original Dance. I've already read "The Rogue Prince", which is a short prequel that explains a lot of the background to the Dance. But "Princess" is 130 pages in paperback and pretty awesome so far. But I'm not very far in yet because I've been busy with stuff other than reading.
Also, I find it hilarious that we now need to be wary of show spoilers in the book thread.
Re: A Song of Ice and Fire [2]
That is a paradox, isn't it. Though George can blame noone but himself. He sold the rights, and he spent 23 years writing effectively 4 books.
Well, at least I spoilered it.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire [2]
I did read The Princess and the Queen.. err. . well.. I did the audiobook. Which was read by Iain Glen oddly.
Not gotten around to The Rogue Prince, yet. Something to look forward too.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire [2]
Not really surprising at this point, but it's now official:
http://watchersonthewall.com/iron-islands-plot-omitted-game-thrones-season-5/
http://watchersonthewall.com/iron-islands-plot-omitted-game-thrones-season-5/
- Spoiler:
- Presumably this means the Iron Islands will play only a minor role in the entire rest of the season, though they still have to get around to killing off Balon.
Re: A Song of Ice and Fire [2]
Yeah, you kind of felt that one was coming.
- Spoiler:
- I think people have talked about Euron probably showing up later in the series, as he's part of the official show backstory. Victarion seems to have been cut, and a lot of what happens on the Iron Islands will probably happen off screen. Which is good and bad, I guess. Some of it dragged a bit, but I think something like the Kingsmoot would have been great television.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire [2]
- Spoiler:
- I don't put too much stock in the show's official backstory. They had put Willas and Garlan Tyrell on a family tree in the extras, but the next season, the show itself said that Loras and Margaery didn't have any siblings. Unfortunately I don't think they have the show planned out in exacting detail more than a season or so in advance. But then again, it's not like GRRM has more than a vague sense where things are going in teh books, either.
