Happy Gondorian New Year!
On March 25, Third Age 3019, the Ring-bearer completed his Quest and destroyed the One Ring, thereby ending the realm of Sauron and reducing him to a powerless spirit. Ever since, the Kingdom of Gondor has celebrated March 25 as its New Year. Out of universe, March 25 was the start of the new year in England until the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in the mid-18th century, and was traditionally associated with Easter. On that point, it's worth noting that the Company departed Rivendell on December 25.

- Spoiler:
- Except that what Tolkien calls "March 25" is actually "25 Rethe" and what we call March 25 is "2 Astron" in the Shire calendar. Tolkien uses our names of the month in the book, but the months of the Shire calendar are of different lengths and there are also several days that are not part of any month, so it's not a one-to-one comparison.
But let's not let that get in the way...

It's also the Feast of the Annunciation and Maryland Day, so clearly the 25th of March is special.

Re: Happy Gondorian New Year!
I just had a terrible realization. Didn't the Hobbit come out on DVD on Tuesday? Or was that Monday? Lovely coincidence

To be fair, waffles are awesome.
I ended up reading a bunch of early FOTR Book 1 stuff last night on a whim, and it was as great as ever. That's the portion of LOTR that I've read the most, largely because of various abortive attempts at re-reading the entire book, but it does also have some of my favorite moments. Frodo's last view of Crickhollow, for instance. And I forgot just how funny Pippin's wisecracks are. I don't wanna just go on and on listing stuff I liked, but it really is a phenomenal book and it's always nice to be reminded of that.
Re: Happy Gondorian New Year!
The early FotR chapters are my favourite parts too I can't just pick up the book and read a chapter here, or a few pages there, though, that only ends up with me rereading the entire thing

Re: Happy Gondorian New Year!
I always fall in love with the story again when reading those early parts.
(Though I've had some abortive attempts at re-reading the entire book too. )
Ah, well. Let's make a deal to tackle this reading Tolkien while eating waffles thing next Gondorian New Year then. Who knows, perhaps we could even make it into a forum event.

Re: Happy Gondorian New Year!
I think Book 3 is my favorite on the whole, but I also really like Book 5. I've read Books 2 and 4 comparatively the fewest, and always felt like I was under-appreciating 4 in particular, so I might try re-reading just those some time, since that's easier to fit into my schedule.
And I'd certainly be down for a waffles and Tolkien day.

Re: Happy Gondorian New Year!
Yep, Book 3 (Rohan stuff) and Book 5 (Minas Tirith stuff) are my favorites as well. I used to prefer 3 but have grown into preferring 5. Frodo and Sam stuff is harder to get into: Frodo's a bore, even Tolkien admitted it.

Re: Happy Gondorian New Year!
It's kinda weird since Faramir is my favorite character, but yeah, I've always struggled with Book 4. I think Frodo may have grown on me as I've grown up though so I should give it another try sometime in the not too distant future.
