Scientists had a pigeon, hawk, and owl fly over super-sensitive microphones to measure how much sound was created by their flapping. Owls are known for their silent flying abilities and this is demonstrated by the barn owl in the GIF above.

That's very much worth investigating. I'm sure if figured out the efficiency can be applied to airplane wings and propellors.

I am so in awe of owls. how they are so silent is near enough "other worldly". Where I live I hear them 'whooooing' most nights & one did a fly by under the street lamp & it truly is silent ! really feels you with a WOW feeling.

I saw an Owl the other day, it was the size of a small fat furry dog. with orange eyes. it was pretty magnificent.

I half-see them in the night when I'm out checking the bogs.
The Great Horned Owls like to cruise low over the bogs hunting for voles. You'll think you're completely alone, and then suddenly there will be a large presence wrapped in a dark shadow that fills your peripheral vision, and then it's gone just as quickly.
It's a bit unsettling till you get used to them, but they don't seem to mind me. I think they consider me a fellow hunter in the night.

We do have owls around here, I think. But I don't often see one. Whenever I hear something hoot at my cabin it's mostly a wood dove. Which is fine, but nowhere near as interesting.
