Re: Damn computers...
I like the idea of a custom build, put your own requirements in, all the RAM, hard drive etc you want, would it be much more expensive than buying an off the shelf model ? I have a friend with an Alienware PC,...... Id like one. The eyes are freaky

And why would you ever cook food, when you can just buy it frozen? {{{ }}}

Re: Damn computers...
true, but then again home cooked food always tastes better than frozen food, not sure a home-built computer would be better than a bought one.. (at least if i was to build it )

No, it doesn't need to be any more expensive, especially if you can find an old one with a good box and power supply to use as a chassis.
I had a local geek build me a hot rod in an old box that has the speed and memory of a computer costing 4 times as much, all for the cost of the cheapest little notebook.
Not only did I keep good materials from going into the trash, but this machine will probably outlast a cheap notebook by 10 years, and it's easily upgradeable and repairable.
My only complaint is the guy who built it likes Windows 8. I'm not a fan.
I'm working on that....

I'm thinking about it for my next computer. I really like my Macbook Pro, but I don't want to spend $1,000 dollars on another computer again. (I dropped mine the other day, and while it's currently working fine, there is some damage to the bottom's outer shell that is worrying to me. Three years without dropping it, I thought that was pretty good. ) I watched a youtube video where they show you how to install all the parts, and it doesn't look too complicated.
So I was thinking about having a desktop again that I would build, and then maybe get a Chromebook if I need to do mobile stuff.
This is all preliminary at the moment.

Re: Damn computers...
windows 8 is kinda shit, but 8.1 (which i have on my tired, old computer) is great once you get used to it
Re: Damn computers...
I've used Windows 8 at my grandparents house, it was so confusing.

I have windows 8 on my laptop, I've had it for about six months, and I still haven't really used any of the apps, I guess I'm more lazy than a technophobe, but I'd rather had something ugly and functional than confusing and flashy, I get the feeling Microsoft changed Windows to be more like Macs, I hate Macs!

Re: Damn computers...
Whilst downloading Google drive a few weeks ago, I seemed to have downloaded a virus of some sort as well, everytime I get to my desktop screen, my mouse icon either freezes or dissapears, it's more annoying than a hindrance (as I wiped the file and use a different profile on the laptop I'm fine now) but I'm actually kinda dissapointed, the first time I get a virus and it's not even a very bad one...

Re: Damn computers...
That doesn't sound like a virus to me, plus how could you get a virus from downloading a google product from a google website.

Re: Damn computers...
About a year ago iTunes decided to fuck up all my metadata during an update. Everything in my library has been a mess, I'm currently looking for a cloud solution for storing my music files. Going to try google first because I can upload a lot for free.

Re: Damn computers...
microsoft skydrive can be quite handy for storing stuff- uploading is slow but downloading stuff once its there is ok.
And you get a good size for free. All my HD edits are on skydrive.

Re: Damn computers...
Turns out Google's Music Manager application is a pain in the ass. Not uploading entire albums and there being absolutely no explanation for it. So I'm trying Amazon.

I feel you, bungo. For some reason, the wi-fi at my mom's house does not get along with my computer much these days, but it's fine with the phone.
Re: Damn computers...
I swear my computer sounds like it's going to blast off into outer space when I'm watching Netflix. Glad I'm not alone in this.

Re: Damn computers...
I switched back to Ubuntu earlier this year and I've been very happy with the decision. It's really easy to install Linux on a computer, and many distributions are free, which is nice of course. You just have to get a copy of the OS on a disc (either by downloading it and burning it yourself, or getting a disc from someone else) and then follow the step-by-step instructions.
