Just letting everyone know If I mysteriously dissapear from the forums sometime soon (possibly for quite a while) it won't be because I've finally grown tired of Petty's cheek (joking), I've been having rather alot of difficulties connecting to the internet lately (a crappy mobile broadband dongle being my only way), and unfortunately lack the time and money (and knowledge, never been that good with computers) to obtain a more secure connection or decent replacement laptop/computer. So if you don't see much of me in the future spare a thought for the poor computer illerate of this world and the annoying crap we have to put up with...  

Anyone else have tales of woe to share?

I had to suffer a similar means of connecting for some time too Malick, and worse I had to connect the dongle to a cable that went right across my room and then hang it out the window just to get a signal at all   

Are you friendly with your neighbours? If so and your pc can pick up wireless connections and they have wireless (both quite likely) perhaps you could come to some arrangement to pay a percentage of the monthly bill in return for piggybacking on their signal.
I had just such an arrangement with my neighbours for a short period until I got a phone line sorted out.

Yeah my neighbors are pretty friendly like that, so I'm sure they'd be OK with that as a last resort (when they are around that is), but my laptop seems OK at the moment (I'm honestly not sure if it's the laptop itself or the internet dongle-I've only had problems in the last week or so, the laptop is new and rather pricey...) so I'm not going to muck around with wi fi unless I have to.

It's not exactly A 'serious' problem, just a rather annoying one, and I'd rather pour my crabbit out on the internet than my colleagues at work   

Might be worth asking them if you can try using their connection just as a test- if it seems to work fine you can at least blame the dongle and eliminate the pc as an issue.
If you still have the same problem then it might be your laptop.

I have the same problem Malick, I have only ever had one of those Spawn of Mordor Dongle things. I have paid for a year, and every month it renews, but if I watch anything on streaming or videos then the monthly credit goes in two seconds and for the rest of the month it goes as slow as a mini Ice Age, but slower. srsly no shit sometimes it takes me HALF AN HOUR     to open one email, really and truly I am telling the truth one fucking half hour waiting like an idjit. The other day this reeeeely important email arrived from my Uni telling me whether I had a place or not, imagine I wanted to find out asap, but oh no I had to wait.................and wait..............and wait................................................................................................................................................................30 minutes later it bloody opens.     I wanted to open the window and crush the computer into smitherines. But because I have the patience of a saint (as Petty will testify  ) i did not in fact throw the computer through the window. so yeah I hate dongles too.  

I cant afford wifi I think its expensive but not sure.   

Why the fook cant they leave windows XP alone ? I see its hitting the bottom of the toilet pan next month. I know its old but, I like it, Im used to it & isnt it my fooking choice ?
I had a dongle once, Oh boy, never again. I was charged by the month, I kept to the agreed usage but, O2 made out Id over stepped & wapped on no end of charges until I moaned my ass off & took it further. It was such a fight sorting it all out & proving I did not go over the usage I was allowed etc, Totally ruined my enjoyment of the 'interwunderwebz'. They said Id get coverage from where I live & I couldnt, they said Id get a decent download speed & I could have walked faster ! Grrrr !

You are on contract? That's even worse! I was on a contract dongle once, you have my sympathies, damn thing had a faulty connection and always ran out of data, I was on the phone for over an hour trying to cancel the bloody thing, pay as you go isn't much better.

Windows 7 isnt too bad Azriel. Thats what I use.
Skip Vista- its bloody awful, the only thing worse is windows 8- avoid it like the plague.

Win7 is very like XP only it works better and has a few handy extra features.

trouble is if I want to watch UK tv shows I have to use streaming which eats up the credit thing, and at the moment theres loads of stuff on the BBC I want to watch like The Voice    and Jonathan Creek. But once this contract finishes I will defo look into wifi.

Actually, whether you connect by wifi or not has nothing to do with your service provider (except if you use a dongle thingy I guess).  If you've got a cable connection you can either plug your computer directly to it, or plunk down some money to buy a wifi broadcaster and plug the cable into it.  I suppose nearly everyone these days who gets a cable connection also buys the wifi broadcaster, but you are looking for a cable company, not a wifi company. The wifi is all your doing.

For those in he UK I can recommend plusnet- been with them for a while now- no problems streaming stuff, no download limits, no caps and my monthly bill for internet, phoneline and calls is about £31 a month, so about a quid a day.
And when I have had an issue the customer service was good and sorted it out.
