Re: The General Tolkien News Thread
LOL Petty... and yes I had to vacate while the tower was being painted.
Plus an angry stoat had taken up unwanted residence in the top chamber, so that was time consuming... actually the animal turned out to be a moon-distorted reflection of me in a silver charger [a gift from a past Queen of Norway], but it had to be dealt with.
Spot on about the colour: I told the painters 'grey' but as they owned horses the matter became confused.

That is great. The "single dream" quote was perhaps the most annoying to me because it felt like it started cropping up everywhere after that Weta promotional video.

Re: The General Tolkien News Thread
It does Malick. They created such lovely realistic scenes not just for LOTRs but for The Hobbit also, such a shame they fooked up the story.

The 'extended edition' of Smith of Wooton Major is going to be re-released next February in a pocket hardback forma like The Hobbit Farmer Giles etc:

Re: The General Tolkien News Thread
Ah, that was always my favourite of the shorter Tolkien stories. As it exemplifies so well a common theme of his work. The deep and constant longing for the world of the immortal elves by mortal men, and the complete impossibility of ever getting there.
I might actually have to get that one. I only have it in norwegian.
Always loved the cover too.

Wait, a "pocket hardback format"? What would that entail?

Generally, it refers to a hardcover book that is about the size of a mass-market paperback (maybe four or five inches long).
Re: The General Tolkien News Thread
Ah, ok. So is there a normal version? And this is just a release in a different format? Or is this the format it's released in?

Re: The General Tolkien News Thread
Based on the Amazon listings, it looks like this new "extended edition" of Smith is only going to be available in the pocket hardcover format, at least at first. I wouldn't be surprised if it gets a paperback release at some point in the future.

Just to Clarify the extended version of Smith of Wooton Major was originally published in 2005 as a standard hardback edition, as far as I'm aware this is the first time it has been reprinted since (I don't think it's being republished in any other format), you could try getting hold of a copy of the 2005 edition, but it would probably be very expensive , as most out of print books are.
The Hobbit, Roverandom, Farmer Giles Of Ham, The Adeventures of Tom Bombadil (the recently released extended version) and The Lord Of The Rings have all been released in pocket hardback as well, presumably the publishers think it would make a nice looking box set.

drat, not out yet. I like the idea of using John Howe as the focal point; he's got a good persona for this type of thing.

Re: The General Tolkien News Thread
Thanks for the clarification there, malick. The four volume boxed set of TH+LOTR pocket hardbacks are coming out on Tuesday (I only know this because of work). They're being pushed for the holidays and to coincide with BOFA.
Re: The General Tolkien News Thread
Crikey, I wasn't exaggerating on the quite expensive part:
