Good thinking :)The transition between 'a' and 'u' is too distinct there, but it's close. The 'a' would sound a little bit more like a mix of an 'a' and an 'e' the way it is pronounced in 'especially'. Hard to describe, and I do a pretty lousy job at it, sorry
ok. it's either this:
http://translate.google.com/#auto/en/smeug
or

Norc, you have to look back in the thread and realize he's pronouncing it with a british buried r. (Only they can hear it). More like 'schmohg'. We spent hours hashing it out, don't throw all our hard work away!

and Mjolnir/Mjølnir is pronounced:

Re: what's the meaning of the name Smaug?
Thanks, Norc! Those all sound only very subtly different to my ear, though.

yepp, and that is probably how he wants us to pronounce Smaug too, although since it's such a deep rooted norwegian word and it basically means the same, it'll be hard for us to pronounce it any other way.

DEFINITELY not the first one. "Smeeg"?
The second one is closest to how I pronounce it, which is halfway between Smog and Smowg. (with "ow" as in "how"), pretty close to Tolkien's supposed 'loud' sound.

Maybe Tolkien himself read Smaug in the audio collection? Can't remember.

This confirms my opinion about Sindarin short i however. The films say mithril with i as in machine for example, which I disagree with.
O_O the answer is here... :O

Re: what's the meaning of the name Smaug?
It's sadly not a word in my dialect.
å smyge smyger smøg har smøget
That one sounds correct to me. At least as far as the norwegian pronaunciation goes.

it's a more closed off version of the broad OW-sound (as in loud) but you still distinguish between the two sounds. the second one has more of a diphthong feeling to it (and is the way i pronounce it)

i was thinking of the vowel sound, but the Sch-german sound thing is also terribly wrong. don't do a peter jackson.

I don't want to even mention a tie-in by Charmin for Thor 2.
