Re: what's the meaning of the name Smaug?
Subjective opinion doesn't make it wrong
Long after reading the books I read that Tolkien stipulated that it was to be pronounced "au (aw) as in loud, how and not laud, haw." So it can't be that wrong when an English professor feels it necessary to explain how he designed the name to be said... Both ways make perfectly logical sense.

The hell with all of this: Amy Adams just said that Jennifer Lawrence has soft kissable lips! I've suddenly got more important things to think about...

I'm betting Odo is going to let this one pass, but my manfeelings for Bear Grylls he writes songs about Just to regain some lost manliness, I must say a google search on Jennifer Lawrence caught my interest too

She keeps it real and off-kilter.
Along the same lines, I might have gone gay for Antonio Banderas in his younger days...

I meant in the second link. Doesn't she say "smølg"?
I get that your dialect might sound a bit different from the first one though.
Norc wrote:
yeah.. u have such a posh dialect.. so danishfied..
Whatwhatwhat? Well, yeah, maybe. I would say smyge I guess, smyger and smøg as well. Smyget I would say is borderline. It's not a word I would use often though.
Might I hasten to add I don't sound danish, though we might use more of the same words.

You know, reading back a couple of posts, I do wonder what your friend is going to get out of this thread for her "særoppgave" Nora.

Re: what's the meaning of the name Smaug?
Irca should pronounce Smaug as if it is a Norwegian word, this also goes for Beorn and all Elven names and words. She will then say them nearly perfect. Never ask English speaking people of these things, Norc you fool.

On Jennifer Lawrence at that.
Norc wrote:
This is how it went, from memory. if it's of any help. At least she won't have to wade through the entire thread if these things aren't of interest.
Rhadagast answered your first question:
Radaghast wrote:From Wikipedia:Tolkien noted that "the dragon bears as name—a pseudonym—the past tense of the primitive Germanic verb smugan,[8] to squeeze through a hole: a low philological jest."[7]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smaug
Ringo then said it's the same word in Norwegian. Then there was the "how to pronounce Smaug" discussion, which led to the "how to pronounce Smaug in Norwegian" discussion which led to the Jennifer Lawrence discussion and thread.
Not sure what she'll get out of the last one, though.
I think Amarië is right on the pronunciation question as well. She should just keep to the Norwegian pronunciation.
