also, they're all based on actual happenings, there are small descriptions underneath

(also, denmark is the most accepting country, first out with gay laws and all that)

One day the Swedes and Danes will stop acting like children, but today is not that day. XD

this one is spot on considering the amount of danes in tv-shows and movies lately.

I've read Scandinavia and the World for a couple years, but unfortunately a lot of them go over my head until I read the descriptions.

Ummm...I know it's for sale. I've seen the tins with the bulging tops (for those who don't know, when raw fish rots it makes a putrid gas which pressurizes the can and sprays nastiness when you try to open it).
But WHY do people eat it????
Can somebody please explain?

Re: Fjordlandia Viking bar & kaffistove, main str. 221B, Needlehole [2]
actually i haven't tried gammel-ost.. i have only tried rakfisk.. and that was ok...
Re: Fjordlandia Viking bar & kaffistove, main str. 221B, Needlehole [2]
Do we actually eat that here? I thought it was just the Swedish.
We do have rakfisk, but I actually think that's rather good. And it isn't really rotten.
Surströmming (what the sweds eat) looks a bit more daunting though.

Call me overly cautious if you like, but if anybody serves me food and feels they need to explain that "it isn't really rotten", I may have to excuse myself....

Well, I'm no rakfisk expert. It's salted and fermented, not left to rot. It's actually a way of preserving it, so kind of the opposite. And it's surprisingly good.
What that Sweedish thing really is though, I have no idea.

Re: Fjordlandia Viking bar & kaffistove, main str. 221B, Needlehole [2]
I should probably be a little more serious and say that I grew up around fishing boats and worked for 10 summers in a salmon cannery in Alaska, so I have a nose that can identify many different fragrances of fermentation and decay in fish. Probably because of that, I believe that fish is best when it's fresh. To me that means hours rather than days old.
I recognize that there are many cultures that enjoy those smells and tastes, exactly like strong cheeses. In coastal Asia they make fermented fish sauces that are highly prized and put in everything the way some people use salt. They say it whets the appetite....
I can eat it if I'm starving, but I would much rather miss a meal or two. Better to just buy fruit at the public market.

hahaha, aw, dave the food traditions in norway are mainly based on how to preserve food for months and it still being edible, and by edible i mean not deadly.
Re: Fjordlandia Viking bar & kaffistove, main str. 221B, Needlehole [2]
also, did u hear about the story of a norwegian guy, i think it was in brittain, who wanted to serve rakfisk, and the neighbours called the cops because they thought he had killed something...
Re: Fjordlandia Viking bar & kaffistove, main str. 221B, Needlehole [2]
I know a story of a Vietnamese family who had helped the Americans during the war, and were escaping to America for their own protection as the US Army withdrew. They were only allowed one bag for their possessions, and in that bag they carefully packed several bottles of fermented fish sauce, the finest they could buy.
But when they arrived at the air force base and the father went to reclaim their bag, there were dozens of angry people swearing and complaining about the putrid stench that was all over everything. It seems one of the bottles had broken and soaked other people's luggage as well.
The poor man was too ashamed to reclaim his bag, so he just left it there on the carrousel, and led his family into a strange new country with nothing but the clothes they were wearing.....
It was funny and heartbreaking at the same time to hear him tell the story years later.

Yes. If it doesn't come through in my telling of his story, I'd like to say that this was a very brave and honorable man. Honest, and Proud in the best sense of the word.
But a man who clearly had a love of fermented fish....

This wont make all that much sense to most of you, but I always loved this paragraph. (From Peer Gynt.)
(Pinseaften.
