okey dokey it is useful to catch the spelling mistakes as well, I have made some corkers. the squiggles catch them.

Also worth checking what language your spell check is in (thats under tools too go to options/language settings) you dont want to be using American English if youre sending it to a prof in the UK.

Yo might have to go to the open office website to download the english dictionary- been a long time since I did it so I cant remember if UK english is one of the defaults or not.

How am I supposed to catch up on what's going on when you all post sooooooo much!

Don't think we've 'met' as yet, but I do lurk even when there is little time to post.

I was gonna try to do NaNo this year in the hopes that the rules would help me actually get more writing done, but I'm still not having trouble picking something that feels worth spending time working on when there's a lot of movies and TV I want to watch also. And it doesn't help that I've been feeling pretty under the weather for the past several days.

Not to mention writing all those new Needlehole stories I am sure you have been doing  

Attempts at Needlehole stuff have made up the majority of my false starts over the past several months.

You don't need to pick something to write, you just do and see what comes out.

I had a two page outline last year, but this year I knew I wanted to do some of the inisfail stuff I've been world building on and off for the last two years, but utterly failed to decide on a plot.

So I flooded my mums new home town after a fiery rain of brimstone and started from there.

It is the only time of the year I write regularly so I was determined to have another go this year.

No, but its amazing what happens when you just clear your mind and write. No editing or pondering over every word.

yes i know. sometimes i want it to be good so badly i end up giving myself stage fight, it's ridiculous. but once u get started it always seem to just... pour out

does anyone know roughly how many pages of A4, 6000 words is?

We don't use A4 in the US, but I checked a few sites via Google and it seems like the average is about 400 words per page for A4, so that would be 15 pages. You can check the exact number of words in a document using the word count function in the tool menu, though.

cool.  15 pages seems about right. thanks. are computer pages the same size as A4? like a Word document page. would 6000 words still be 15 pages?

It depends on how your options are set up.  Click on the "Format" tab at the top and then select "Page" from the menu.  There should be an additional menu in the top-left corner of the pop-up window that opens also called "Format"; you can select A4 from that menu.  It may be automatically set up that way since you downloaded it from an A4-using country.

As always, this hinges on our versions of Open Office being set up basically the same.

Also depends on font size and type, and line spacing, etc etc.

Do one page then run a word count on it.  Or half a page, whatever.
