Doctor Who [7] - Page 4 Empty Re: Doctor Who [7]

Post by Pettytyrant101 Mon Oct 07, 2013 3:37 am

'The websites of the Radio Times magazine and the Daily Mirror newspaper in the UK have this evening published articles claiming that episodes of Doctor Who previously missing from the BBC's archives, starring Patrick Troughton as the Doctor have been recovered and will be made available for sale in the UK.
The news follows an article published by the Mirror's sister title, The People, this morning. While this earlier article contained the unlikely claim that all missing episodes of Doctor Who had been recovered from a station in Ethiopia, it follows months of speculation in fandom that a large number of episodes had been recovered, with many of the circulating rumours focusing on a recovery from Africa.
Officially, 106 of the 253 episodes of Doctor Who broadcast during the 1960s are missing, being wiped or junked due to the BBC's archiving policies of the 1960s and 70s.
So far there is no official comment from the BBC on articles published,
However the corporation’s commercial arm BBC Worldwide has called a press conference and screening in a London hotel.
The invitation sent out had the event details written inside the screen of a old-fashioned sixties style television set, complete with a dial to tune in the channels, seeming to hint at the type of news to come.'- Gallifrey Base

Um, ok, I admit it, there is no real justification for this pic, or story to go with it other than I was really struck by the picture-Karen Gillan photographed watching Asylum of the Daleks at the New York Premiere- (although I do love that about current Who, not many tv shows have episodes premiered at global screenings)

Doctor Who [7] - Page 4 Tumblr_mt6oe06mJr1r7wapho1_500_zps51e3a4ea

In actual Who news-

'BBC News have now confirmed that a (currently unspecified) number of previously assumed missing Doctor Who episodes have now been returned to the BBC.
Entertainment correspondent Lizo Mzimba reports:
A number of early episodes of Doctor Who, which were believed to have been permanently lost, have been returned to the BBC.
BBC Worldwide is expected to confirm the find at a press conference in London later this week.'- Gallifrey Base

Turned out to be 9 missing episodes found (all 2nd Doctor)- not as many as hoped by I couldnt have hoped for much better in terms of which ones (ok Remembrance of the Daleks would have been the greatest and it wasnt there)  but Web of Fear was- and Ive wanted to see it since I was abut six and read the novelisation of it, sadly episode 3 is still missing of the six parter. I am so excited at the prospect of seeing this classic story for the first time. Was a hide behind the sofa book, cant wait to hide properly from it on tv! (and its one of the first Great Intelligence episodes too!)
The other episodes were from the story The Enemy of the World- completing that story for the first time since transmission.

Official as far as I can tell, but not actually a trailer for the 50th so much as a trailer for 50 years so far, it has no 50th footage in it at all.

New director joining the Who team for the start of series 8- with the first two episodes to be directed by Ben Wheately. No, me neither at first, but he seems to be held in rather high regard by those in the know-

'Wheatley, who will be one of the most high-profile directors ever to have worked on Doctor Who, told the BBC:
I am very excited and honoured to be asked to direct the first two episodes of the new series of Doctor Who. I've been a fan since childhood (Tom Baker is my Doctor if you are asking). I've been watching the current run of Doctor Who with my son and have discovered it all over again. The work that has been done is amazing. I'm really looking forward to working with Peter Capaldi and finding out where Steven Moffat is planning to take the new Doctor.
News of the hiring of Wheatley has generated some excitement online, with the website Den of Geek describing him as "...one of British cinema's best working directors. Throw in the Peter Capaldi factor, and this is, in our humble view, quite brilliant news."

The only thing I know him from is the art film A Field In England-

Still new blood, new ideas always a necessity for Who.

And talking of new blood (albeit in an older body!)  'novelist and screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce is working on a script for a potential future episode of Doctor Who'. He wrote the screenplay for 24 hour party people, as well as a bunch of TV and childrens novels. he also co-scripted the Olympics Opening Ceremony with Danny Boyle.
The Who future continues to look bright, and to look ahead.

new stills and stuff http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2013-10-16/matt-smith-david-tennant-and-john-hurt-in-new-pictures-from-doctor-who-50th-anniversary-special

i am going to say something and i don't know if it has been said before,  but John Hurt has a red sonic screwdriver and is wearing
the same vest and clock-thing as Matt Smith. (edit: maybe not exactly the same, but it is similar Smile having two clocks in the vest, does tennant have that too? can we read something from this?)

And Hurt is also wearing Mcgann's suit and Eccelston's jactket, I'm banking on Hurt being the Doctor who ended the Time War, a pre Hartnell incarnation before he took the name of doctor, or the Valeyard, or perhaps a combo of all 3...

I've started watching old who from the start. The effects are ropey even for the day, some of the serials are too long and stretched out (in contrast to new who where most eps are too short and cluttered) and his grand daughter is really f*cking annoying, but it's pretty fun stuff so far.

21 episodes down, 600+ to go...

spooky I was thinking the exact same thing about the clothing. Mcganns velvet waistcoat and Eccys leather coat. Its like he has raided his biological attic and is dressed in past memories. Shocked

Well Eccleston DID turn down the 50th special, and Mcgann has been laying an awful lot of vague teases on twitter so you never know, maybe Hurt was designed as a replacement for the 2 of them.

I will be pretty annoyed if Mcgann wasn't even approached about a cameo, besides being the missing link, he's a great actor, and from the few snippets of his 8th doctor audio adventures I've heard quite an interesting take on the character.

You have some very painful tines t come on the effects front, and ion some cases the story front too, but also much goodness.
I think some old stories are too long and too sow paced by modern standards, but I also think modern stories are often to rushed, there must be a happy medium between the two.

Also hoping the release of the publicity picks from the 50th heralds the appearance of the long awaited trailer. bounce

#probably the best explanation of a device in the tv history
This is literally my fourth or fifth time reblogging this.
It’s still hillarious.
One of my favorite lines
I kinda feel like the writers wrote this line specifically to drive the kind of fans who want to figure out how sci-fi tech would theoretically work crazy. They’re like “nope! We’re not going to give you any techno babble to tear apart or investigate or mull over to tell us how we’re doing it wrong, or how it compares in effectiveness to similar tech in other franchises.”
I also feel like this is one of those times when the TARDIS’s translation circuit just gave the fuck up. Like the ‘physics physics physics’ scene, where he is imparting secrets of the universe and the TARDIS is like THERE ARE NO WORDS FOR THIS IN ENGLISH DAMN IT DOCTOR OH HELL FUCK IT.

OH MY GODS she TOTALLY edits his speech. I be he actually swears a fuckton but the TARDIS is like THERE ARE CHILDREN
And with Capaldi as the twelfth doctor the TARDIS is just like. FUCK IT.
