Re: Doctor Who [7]
Just back from the 50th Anniversary showing at the theatre.
It was really a great experience. Having all these fellow geeks around me with their Tom Baker scarves and Smith/Gillan shirts, fezzes, etc. A few people in the audience had their sonic screwdrivers, and held them up during the pre-show now and then.
The episode was really dorky, and really self-referencing, and completely entertaining.

Anyway, good times.

- Spoiler:
- The Sontaran introduction to the theatre format was just deliciously comic. "Popcorn can feel pain!" *crunch--squeak-crunch*
My cousin next to me went into hysterics when

- Tom Baker
- Spoiler:
- all three doctors joined together. And the finale lacked the sense of insurmountable odds that I enjoyed in episodes like The Satan Pit, or Turn Left (to name a few). In this episode it was really just a matter of hitting on a good plan. The execution itself required small effort.
Anyway, good times.

- Spoiler:
- I sort of agree with you Forest- in that you are right it was about coming up with the plan and not how it was executed- but I felt the focus of the story was never on the executing of any plans so much as on the Doctor healing himself*, remembering the promise he made to himself when he choose the name the Doctor- 'Never cowardly, never cruel. Never give in, never give up'- even 400 years after the event it turns out he really does never 'give in or give up'- and I found that emotionally very satisfying for the character- so its a finale, just not the usual sort, if you see what I mean.
I also think its an episode that only gets better with repeat viewings. There was, at least for me, a heavy weight of expectations on the viewing experience, and Moffat never gives you quite what you are expecting which sometimes works against him on a first viewing I feel.
I have a friend who on first viewing told me it was a 7 out of 10- two days later he informed me he had seen it again and revised his score to 9.5 and it was only not a 10 because nothing is perfect!

For me it was a Doctor Who episode for Doctor Who fan's (like PJ keeps arguing he's making The Hobbit: a fan for the movie fans). The episode simply had so many squirmy-delicious bits that are clearly fine-tailored for our enjoyment. It displays a very good feel for what makes fans tick, as well as a deftness in setting up the scenarios involving three of the Doctors. As you point out, these scenes contain the heft of the drama and work the best. You simply can't be bored in these scenes with so much Doctor on-screen.

Re: Doctor Who [7]
I think the difference with Pj is Pj is not a fan of Tolkien but a certain style of spectacle led film making- so thats what we get.
Moffat and co (even RTD!) however are fans that grew up and got their dream job- they know what pleases fans because they are among the shows biggest fans- these were the people when the show was off the air were making the Doctor Who clubs, writing the fanzines (in the days before internet) and sending them out mail order.
So what we got was basically a 75 minute love letter to the show.

Agreed on all points Petty!
And yes Norc, I found the slobbery habits of the Zygons to mix strangely with their dependence upon "a certain level of technological comfort."
How comfortable can it be to have slobber running down the front of your face?
Reminded me of the Abzorbalof more than anything else...

Its also why I am less worried than some might expect at the prospect of PJ being involved in making an episode of Who- he might not be a natural Tolkien fan, but he is a life long Who fan with a genuine passion for the show (he owns a few Daleks and McCoys 7th Doctor outfit among other things)- and even in his LotR's and other films you can detect still the influences of Who's scare the children monsters of the week ethos in there.
zygons- I think the best thing they changed about them was the voice- it still sounds like a zygon but its not so heavily laid on, not quite so hissy and throaty- it was often hard in classic Who to make out exactly what a zygon was saying. They have always drooled- maybe they were waiting on human science to get far enough to come up with a soluton better than a bib!

Re: Doctor Who [7]
Brilliant reply to a question by Steven Moffat on the importance of Doctor Who to culture as a hero, I thought it was beautiful and spot on ( and I plan on making it my new sig!)-
"Its hard to talk about the importance of an imaginary hero. But heroes are important. Hero's tell us something about ourselves. History books tells us who we used to be, documentaries tell us who we are now, heroes tell us who we want to be.
And a lot of our heroes depress me. But when they made this particular hero they didn't give him a gun, they gave him a screwdriver so he could fix things. They didn't give him a tank, or a warship, or an x-wing fighter, they gave him a call box from which you can call for help. And they didn't give him a superpower, or pointy ears or a heat ray, they gave him an extra heart. An that's an extraordinary thing.
There will never come a time when we don't need a hero like the Doctor."- Steven Moffat

"Australia's figures show that The Day of the Doctor was a huge hit in cinemas. The 50th Anniversary adventure took $1.54 million (£872K) at the weekend, placing it third in the charts. Webwombat reported:
Showing on just 107 screens, the sci-fi celebration average an astounding $14,399 per screen (pretty much means every session was sold out) for a final take of over $1.5M.
Meanwhile, in New Zealand, Flicks reports the episode was even more successful, reaching second place in the chart after taking $187,029 (£95K) at the box office."- Gallifrey Base

Re: Doctor Who [7]
I just discovered that "Terror of the Zygons" wasn't filmes in Scotland either. Bit of a shame as there are a lot of wonderfull locations there. And especially around Loch Ness where the story is supposed to be set.Pettytyrant101 wrote:Might be Wales given its based in Cardiff- parts of Wales are much like parts of Scotland. I did wonder myself however when watching.

Blue if memory serves almost all of classic Who with the exception of City of Fear was shot in England, and mainly in the same few locations, a particular quarry was very popular...

Re: Doctor Who [7]
Apparently Day of the Doctor's cinema takings globally for that one day was 10million dollars!
It also did well in the US-
"Doctor Who took a stunning $4.8 million at the US box office on Monday, equivalent to 3 million pounds, making The Day of the Doctor the number two Movie of the day. "
This could be interesting, I am sure the people who count the beans at the BBC have all their bells ringing, not to mention are other big TV networks who might follow the model- could cinema ironically be saved by tv?
