Yeah, more people start to come on once the hype season starts. That's why even though this was fairly underwhelming I can't be upset about it or anything.

Yup, bad for the crabbit but good for the forum.
Mind you hopefully we will break a maximum of 12 for the fiim launch period and first reviews and of course the Forum Awards (as brought to you by Pure Publications, NotP, and buckie) at years end. I hope you are already looking out your dresses and tuxes for it.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
Like I've said before, news about the Hobbit and trailers don't get me excited at all any more, which is a real shame because I'd love to be able to look forward to these films. Still there is one thing in this trailer that just felt wrong altogether - Thorin calling Bilbo a burglar. For me the idea of a burglar is part of what makes the Hobbit what it is - a wonderful tale filled with strange, unexpected and fun things. That something as ordinary as a burglar, and not a shining knight or a powerful magician should be the main character of a children's book always fascinated me in some strange way, and the first hobbit film failed hard at fascinating me in the same way the book did. And that's why it felt so wrong to hear Thorin use the word burglar - it belongs in the book, but not at all in the film, and to me that tiny detail ruins a lot of the experience. I will of course go and watch the film, but I wish I could look more forward to it Anyway, that was my thoughts on the trailer, I hope my ramblings made sense to someone at least

Well I stopped recording it right at the end. And then the new trailer started. Pfff. I thought it was over. Now I have to watch the whole thing and make fun of it on my own.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
We've had days with 20+ people posting, but they're not necessarily all online at the same time. I'm encouraged by PJ's comment that there will be several more vlogs before DOS comes out. Those are always good for activity and getting people excited.Pettytyrant101 wrote:Yup, bad for the crabbit but good for the forum.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
Okay, that was easily the best Hobbit trailer for either of the films so far. I'd even say it was better than the very first trailer from December 2011. The Bard stuff was my favorite part of the trailer; I suspect I will like the Lake-town section of the film much more than the Mirkwood section.

Thanks, Eldo, I got it recorded now. Shit quality, but now I can do my own "review and analsis." (As Mr. Plinkett would say. )Eldorion wrote:Link to the trailer for those who missed it. I'm watching it now.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
Trailer. There wasn't a single line of Tolkien dialogue. A slight attempt with the bravery of hobbits put in the wrong mouth.
I don't get upset anymore, merely mystified that anyone involved can still call this "the Hobbit".

it wasnt Tolkien but that was a well edited trailer. As Eldo said, it was definately the best one we have seen since the first one.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
nearly all trailers have canned generic music as the film's composer works things out.

it would have been nice to hear some Shore though. I miss the atmosphere he conjures up.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
I'm looking forward to hearing Shore's score in the finished film. I'm hopeful that there will be more new themes and less recycled material in this soundtrack. I recall an interview stating something to that effect.
As to the absence of Tolkien dialogue, I can't say that that bothers me very much. I do miss some lines (the burglarhobbit thing I will never understand), but for the most part I don't mind if PJ and co. rewrite the exact lines of dialogue so long as they stay true to the story and characters. The ironic thing is that I think they're actually better at re-purposing Tolkienian lines then keeping the characters faithful. I'll acknowledge that the Coven is not the most skilled at writing in Tolkien's style, but I don't think they're always as bad at it as some suggest.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
Someone called Ed Sheeran has announced that he will be performing the end credits song for DOS, titled "I See Fire". The song will be available on iTunes later tonight, apparently. This seems to confirm the theory that all three Hobbit movies will have end songs performed by men, in contrast to LOTR, which had three songs by women.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
One more thing: apparently what happened at the event after the online people got kicked out is that they showed 20 minutes of footage from DOS.

We just saw 20 minutes of unseen footage from Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The spiders, the dwarves, the elves, the orcs, the barrels, the escapes and the dragon. It's going to be a treat!
