Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
Well, I know that if I ever do get into the screen writing business, if I ever get in a bind, I'll think, "what would boyens do?" then do the exact opposite
What I have noticed is that she makes particularly strong female characters and then makes the male characters strong female characters too. I think that's why there always seems to be a gay connotation; she doesn't understand a male character who isn't manly, so she uses her blueprint for female characters for them instead. So I'm curious to see how Tauriel turns out. Boyens may just cut an paste Eowyn into her character, which I'm not opposed to.
Also, the "extra stuff" about Bard and Laketown might be good. I say this because it will be completely unrelated to the story of the Hobbit and probably Tolkien's world in general, so they might actually create something interesting. I feel like they do better with nothing to work with than something to adapt.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
The sad part Tin was there was no need to add female main characters. THAT is the sad part. Now as far as Bard goes I could give two shits about his family. IMO they are worthless and add nothing to the story other than needless distraction. Tauriel is a crap character added to satisfy Boyens lack of female characters and nothing else. I'm sorry the Hobbit wasn't enough for her as a story but do they really need to fuck it up for everyone? I guess they doTinuviel wrote:Well, I know that if I ever do get into the screen writing business, if I ever get in a bind, I'll think, "what would boyens do?" then do the exact opposite

Love the new avatar Sin although it makes me sad and pissed off at the same time
I agree that there is no need for the female characters, I'm just analyzing what I've observed. Because of her feminine obsession, she's the absolute LAST person who should be writing these films.
Bards family is probably just a bunch of the producer's kids that had to be put in the movie somewhere or PJ wouldn't get his 10 meals a day.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
Bard's daughters are played by James Nesbitt's (Bofur) daughters, both of them. It is their first acting job. Pretty sad Jackson feels the need to just make shit up as he goes along. Bard probably only had one child till Jackson seen Nesbitt's daughters and thought Hey I got an idea lets give him 3 kids and we'll let Tauriel work some elvish magic to save one... Where is the vomit face emoticon?

Nah just pointing out the obvious. Seeing all this Shite Jackson is concocting is just sickening when the real story is SO SO much better and more interesting. And to see how many lemmings just fall into line behind Jackson to worship his messed up vision of the story the "Hobbit"bungobaggins wrote:Sin is going on a rampage!

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
It's not even just the lack of consistency with the story that makes me mad, it's just a God awful film in general! Cinematically it sucks too! I was obsessed with Twilight, like REALLY obsessed, and when I saw the first movie, I wasn't blinded by fandom. It was a shit film, and I was really disappointed. That lead me to shift back to Lord of the Rings (thank Eru!) but still, I couldn't fathom how anyone could have said that that film was good, regardless of how deeply entrenched in the cult you are!!!!!

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
When I think of all the apologists and fanboys and these movies (over on torn and elsewhere), it makes me want to distance myself from liking Tolkien based stuff. I feel like I need to find something else. I don't know why. I just don't want to be associated with it.
But there's not much left that I'm interested in. Breaking Bad is over, all the new Star Trek stuff sucks, I don't want new Star Wars movies. Everything I liked is either over or it sucks now.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
There's a lot more to the Tolkien fandom than just TORn, though. And hell, there's more to TORn than just the fanboys. But I understand feeling like you're done with a certain fandom, whether it's for good or just for a while. There's always more stories and franchises out there, you just have to find the ones that speak to you. If you're feeling at a dead end, then maybe just try something new that you've never seen before and see what the change of pace does for you?
Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
Oh my, I just realized that this is like a huge first world problem. Sheesh.
I still like the books, I just need to find something else that I can look forward to. You know?

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
Yeah, I've gone through that feeling a number of times myself. It's actually why I started watching Breaking Bad (finally started season 4 after the viewing gang was able to get together again ), actually. I'd never seen it but always heard about it, and I was in the mood for something fresh.
Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
Bungo - I always use these times of crisis to go back to some old favourites. Not sure what other sci fi series you have seen but there are 10 years worth of Star Trek TNG, 10 years of DS9, about 8 years of Babylon 5, about 10 years of Stargate and my personal favourite, although mournfully short, 1 year of Space: Above and Beyond.
That is 40 years of T.V. to rewatch!!

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
Bungo depends on what your looking for new novel wise I highly recommend R.A. Salvatore's dark elf series. There are a bunch (19 so far) of books and the last 4 he has reinvented the series by adding new characters and making it many years in the future so all the older characters are dead unless its a flashback. really entertaining reads that go really fast cause they are so immersive.
I don't watch too much TV so I can't help you on that. Walking Dead is about all I can give you there. Movies well the new Riddick film was great IMO,I love Pacific Rim, Gravity was alright not my favorite film.

The Sherlock co-stars weren’t in the same room during scenes between Bilbo Baggins and and the Cumberbatch-voiced dragon, but Freeman says he’s familiar enough with the actor’s style to know how it sounds
Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
Cosigned. I haven't read all of them, but I really dug the first six or so (Dark Elf Trilogy and Icewind Dale Trilogy) back when I was into D&D. War of the Spider Queen, which is in the same setting and was overseen by Salvatore, was pretty neat too.Sinister71 wrote:Bungo depends on what your looking for new novel wise I highly recommend R.A. If we're doing fantasy book suggestions, I will say that I quite enjoyed the Belgariad and the Mallorreon when I was younger, although the author became increasingly preachy towards the end and is downright obnoxious in the "behind-the-scenes" book. It's not the most original fantasy yarn, but it's entertaining and not a chore to get through.
Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
Someone suggested I read the Game of Thrones books today.
Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
i've heard those books are great Lance. I haven't read them myself YET but they are on my to do list.

Re: The Desolation of Smaug pre-release thread [2] [SPOILERS]
The first three are god-tier. The fourth is disappointing and overwritten. I haven't read the fifth yet but I hear it's better than the fourth, but still overwritten and slow. The first three though, for as long as they are (and the third one is over 1300 pages; for reference, all of LOTR fits into a mere thousand), have excellent pacing with something always happening or about to happen.Lancebloke wrote:Someone suggested I read the Game of Thrones books today.
They're depressing as hell, though.

I mean I guess it makes sense, but at the same time I feel like that they could have done two takes, one with him there with Martin and one not. Hopefully Benny was off camera reading his lines at least!
