Oddly enough, I liked that line. I thought it a nice Bilbo moment, and nicely delivered by Freeman. Like someone mentioned on another thread, personal taste

Just too psychoanalytic for me. And I hate in Peej's movies, how the characters are able to take a spell so that someone can make a speech, often at the worst time.

I kind of agree with Ringy, and I must ask the eternal question that I had to ask of myself, "why do we even go and watch the movies? Why not save the money and stick to the books? Because there is a part of us that likes the movies and thrills to them and otherwise we would have to call the Forum something else and if we REALLY HATE PETER AND THE MOVIES WHY DON[T WE JUST CALL IT A DAY AND NOT WATCH ANYMORE OF THE HOBBIT? because we just can't .

Radaghast wrote:I ran into AUJ on TV the other day and got the part where Bilbo catches up with the others and explains his motivation for going on the quest. He was saying something like "Yes, I would be more comfortable at home. That's why I came along, because you don't have one: a home." I couldn't watch anymore. I don't even remember this bit of dialogue. I guess I must have blocked it out.
I thought that was Bilbo's best scene in AUJ (and probably either film so far).

I actually liked that scene. It had some heart, and it felt honest (unlike the rest of the movie). Didn't find any moments like that in DOS.

I thought it was the only genuine bit of the whole film. Its a crying shame Freeman has to gurn his way through the film as the only way he has of conveying any emotion because the dialogue doesnt provide anything to get his teeth on. Watching Sherlock I realize just how good he is, really subtle emotions with micro facial movements, but he almost seems like a parody of himself in TH.

I watched the last Sherlock episode with a friend the other day and we were commenting on that very thing- its almost like watching a different actor. As Watson its full of understatement, and small gestures- the performance PJ has got out from him is broad comedy face pulling.

Re: The most insulting sentence in AUJ (for me).
I have watched one episode of Sherlock and he does come off a lot better in that.
Re: the speech, are we to believe that was his motivation for his mad dash away from the Shire to catch up on foot to Gandalf and the dwarves who are riding ponies? Maybe after "I'm going on an adventure!" they should have added "And I need to help some dwarves regain their home!"

I don't think that's the point of the line. It's a realization Bilbo comes to at the end of the film and it's the reason he changes his mind about going home after having previously decided the quest was a mistake (while in the cave right before Goblin-town).
The biggest reason I like the line is Martin Freeman's delivery of it. Watching season three of Sherlock only a couple weeks after DOS really drives home the difference in his performance between the two series.
Re: The most insulting sentence in AUJ (for me).
Still too much psychobabble, imo, and a need to justify the motivation of a character who is so marginalized in the second movie and who will probably be even more so in the third. And the whole "I'm doing it for you" makes the movies more about the dwarves than about him. Again, though, jmo.
