Pacific Rim is great fun, typical GTD, a bit of light hearted fluff but, good fun, ( think Godzilla, GI Joe ?) I liked it behind the "fluff" it does have a smidge of potential

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
I finally got around to seeing Worlds End (the last in the so called -cornetto trilogy that started with Shaun of the Dead).
Im not quite sure what to make of it- its not bad by any stretch, in fact its all very entertaining. But, it doesnt really feel like a film, more like a flashy tv episode of something.
And the main character, played by Simon Pegg is not very likeable, he is shard to root for- and as a drunken bum myself I should at least empathise with him, and granted by the end you do a lot more, but if it wasnt for Pegg's performance (he always seems likeable) I think the same character played by anyone else would have been pretty repulsive.
And the resolution, if you can call it that never feels in anyway earned, it just sort of happens.
In terms of being one of the set of three films it has all you would expect, little nods to stuff in the other two, the same ensemble of actors (all of whom are excellent) and all the directorial quirks of the first two are present (if maybe less fresh feeling).
So overalll good if you've an hour and a half to kill, but I wouldnt go out of my way to see it.

You're in for a treat if you like giant robot and/or monster action.
Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
John Huston's Moulin Rouge, what a feast of vignettes and color. One of the most poignant films I've seen in a while as well. A crippled artist who keeps his spirit alive through the swirling vibrant life of the Moulin Rouge, nobly enduring the searing jabs to his manhood through wit and alcohol, the man who paints the famous poster that makes the venue a victim of it's success, and ultimately ends up in the Louvre.
I had heard about John Huston's perfection as an artist, but never really realized it until I saw this movie. The Maltese Falcon, African Queen, Key Largo...all very workmanlike, but not deep art to my mind, not probing. Moulin Rouge is the highest form of art.

Yeah I really like Moulin Rouge as a feast for the eyes- bit like The cook, the thief his wife and her lover- also an artistic feast.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
I've seen 'Only Lovers Left Alive' the new Jim Jarmush movie and I loved it. I think it's his best work since ' Ghost Dog' in 1999.
As it is often the case with Jarmusch’s films, it's less about plot than it is about mood and feeling and it's so beautyfully filmed. When Adam and Eve, the two vampires, who are married for centuries (oh yes, this is a vampire movie) drive through the desolated Detroid at night you can feel the decay of society and yet there is an enchanting beauty about it.
The film moves on very slowly, one may say lengthy, but that's just what I enjoyed. Most of the directors today don't take their time, but only rush through their story (if there is one). After the horrifying experience from DOS, I felt like watching pure art.
Apart from the movie itself, I also loved the small old movie theatre, where it played. Like a journey back in time, with worn-out pink, cosy seats, black-and-white pictures of actors at the wall, it was almost as atmospheric as the movie itself.

No, I have not seen any good films lately. Here Comes the Boom was entertaining but not what I'd call good.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
I like a Chuck Heston film now and again, he has been in 3 of my all time favourite films, The Agony and the Escasy (about the life of Michelangelo), El Cid, and Soylent Green. Some people are really snobby about 'The Agony', but my art history tutor told me to forget reading the book and just watch the film as it was pretty accurate historically whereas the book was a load of stodge. I once said I preferred the film at a party once, and these two 'posh townies' dressed in head to foot black just sniggered and said how lowbrow I was, until I told them my tutor had helped to restore the Sistine Chapel ceiling and pretty much knew his arse from his elbow. That shut the patronizing twats up. yep.

I love Pacific Rim.
I'm re-watching it with GdT's commentary.
I found this quote to be rather refreshing.
Hmmm. Reminds me of a certain two hour and fifty minute movie.

I think it's very important when you're dealing in a genre movie, to do things efficiently. Or you end up with…the genre movies that are now two hours and fifty minutes or three hours ten. And, you know, your butt-o-meter is on red alert after an hour and forty-five, and you really want it over. I wanted this movie to have very little fat.

I think Rob Kazinsky got more dialogue in Pacific Rim than he would have gotten throughout all of the three Hobbit movies.

On the other hand, it would have been funny to hear Kili tell Bilbo "I'm gonna drop you like a sack of kaiju shit".

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
Saw the new Carrie and Pacific Rim yesterday. Found both to be good or at least entertaining enough.
The day before I saw After Earth. Not a good film, but not as bad as I expected it would be (and not as bad as The Happening). Had some potential to be decent, at least.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
I'm tempted to see both The Happening and After Earth because I want to see how they compare on the shittiness scale to The Last Airbender. TLA is the only Shyamalan film I've seen, and then only because I'm a fan of the TV series. I've always wondered just how low Shyamalan will/can sink.
My time might be better spent brushing up on his earlier works, though.

From my perspective, his only good outing was The Sixth Sense. Many will say Unbreakable was good too, but I just don't see it.

I thought Signs was good until they ruined it with the alien at the end.
Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
And the idea that their weakness is water.

I didn't mind the water weakness thing. We don't have to always assume water is the key to all life everywhere ever.
And I don't think they were alien Nazgul Eldo. I don't know that... but I don't think so.

I liked the alien design in Pacific Rim. They looked different and not like the typical humanoid alien (e.g. Indiana Jones 4).

Not so much that as that they were unaware of water being on earth; indeed taking up most of its mass. I mean, water is everywhere, even in the air sometimes (and not just when it rains).Lancebloke wrote:I didn't mind the water weakness thing. Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
The film did make a thing of them staying away from water. You assume that they planned the attack during the best possible weather conditions or used technology to stop it raining.
And at least the gave a reason for not needing humans to have to beat a vastly superior alien force through some ridiculous plan. I liked that about it.

A film I used to watch as a child was on the TV today, brought back a lot of memories and almost a tear to my eye
We make jokes about the Swedish, but they've given us Fjordians some of our fondest childhood memories with their childrens' TV and films, and actors like Allan Edwall
