Re: Bilbo the Liar
I'm glad I'm back. Since GB hasn't been doing it lately, I will...
SPAM HAMMER ALL OF YOU IF YOU DON"T TAKE YOU AND YOUR SPAM ELSEWHERE!!!!!
Didn't we have a thread for spam-a-thons???? if not, we should! Because when I come back after a long hiatus and I see an interesting topic and read just a bunch of spam, i feel like I'm wasting precious catching-up time and that the topic has become irrelevant!!!!!!
Whew! that being said...
I'm a bit confused about what exactly has changed from the original text to the newer version, so I may be wrong in saying this. But I think PJ will have Bilbo hiding the ring the whole time, never telling anyone about it, to add extra suspense to the film somehow (I'm not sure exactly how, but it will be very cinematic, I can assure you!) and also have Gandalf or somebody have a growing suspision. maybe even Thorin can find out about the ring, asking Bilbo in his final breaths of life how he managed to sneak up on them after the Goblin fiasco, and Bilbo will tell him it was because of his magic ring. I think that would be an interesting decision.
But the main question is if that, then how would Thorin react???

I agree, for the purposes of cinematic tension, Bilbo can't just reveal the ring to everyone and I may be wrong, but doesn't Bilbo leave out the finding of the ring when he tells it to Gandalf and the dwarfs? Good idea about the ending Tinuviel, it could be a real tear-jerker!

Sorry about the mess Tin! Its uncontrolled youth for you. I blame the mothers.
I start a perfectly serious thread addressing a perfectly serious issue and look what I get!
As to the matter at hand, Bilbo's lie. If memory serves Gandalf doesn't get the truth out of Bilbo until years later. I can imagine PJ however, if he includes the lie, will make a much bigger deal out of it. Bilbo telling Thorin I am not sure about, there is the whole Arkenstone stuff between them so not sure Bilbo would, given how Thorin behaves at the end, so badly in fact that Bilbo 'switches sides'.

Re: Bilbo the Liar
I think I'm a bit fuzzy on the conversation Bilbo has w/ Thorin at the end, I should probably do a bit of re-reading! But it wouldn't have to be some big cinematic moment, just matter of fact.
Example:
Bilbo: (Walks into the tent) You called for me?
Thorin: (Clearly withdrawn in his own thoughts) How did you do it?
Bilbo: Do what?
Thorin: Get past Oin and Gloin that night.
Bilbo: Which night?
Thorin: Come now, don't let me die never knowing. No burglar could slip past those two.
Bilbo: A magic ring.
Thorin: This is no time to lie Master Hobbit. There are no more magic rings, I would know first hand. You must really be some burglar Mr. Baggins. And a fine companion indeed.
Ect. and Thorin could get into whatever he says at the end, tying in who will be king under the mountain and what not.

Re: Bilbo the Liar
I think for me the problem is why would he tell Thorin something he hasn't told Gandalf? Especially at the end when Thorin is acting so badly and greedily?
I can't see what Bilbo's motivation do so is.
(good Thorin impression I have to say! )

Thanks petty
But I have a hunch that the Coven is going to change that. Or at least some of it. And who knows what kind of relationship they'll create between Bilbo and Thorin. Sadly, we can never know what to expect.

Re: Bilbo the Liar
Now that's very true. My instinct tells me he will blow it up somehow, in fact I suspect they will somehow contrive a way to blow the whole Gollum bit up, he will probably follow them to the Lonely Mountain! And a riddle game? Where's the dramatic mileage in that, where are the special effects, the bit where someone hangs off a cliff? No that will change into something awful, a chase through the goblin tunnels, leaping over goblins and through goblin kitchens and dangling off goblin cliffs over impossible chasms. Mark my words everything so far about this film has tended towards, at the mild end, 'please don't do that PJ' all the way through to 'You've got be *#*!** kidding me PJ.'
The last thing we are going to get is anything like a faithful adaptation of the beloved children's classic. I fear not even editing will save this one.

Now now petty, don't burst another crabbit meter!
And I'm sure you'll be able to edit it! PJ did hire Andy to be his assitant to help make the Hobbit as much like LOTR as possible, so never say never my friend!

Re: Bilbo the Liar
The meter is in the danger zone, hold on ((sound of buckie being drunk straight from the bottle) its back in the orange (my default crabbit setting).
I suspect the addition of Andy is not to make it more like the hobbit but more like LotR!
PJ didn't even understand the basic themes of LotR so who knows what he's doing now with so much to make up. Oh damn, back in the red again. New bottle please!
