Re: The Exodus
Anyway, if you hold to David Rohl's view of chronology, just slide the years across in an orderly fashion... e.g. 1628 becomes 1400 or something and all other dates move accordingly. My hypothesis works purely comparatively... circa 1628 is just the date I picked for my template as it appears to be the most popular among the Experts.
Bye now.

Re: The Exodus
Ok so youve got Thera within the accepted time scale Orwell- I would put the aiatic moemtn of Abraham and his family from Ur to Egypt prior to that- at s far back as 2000bce - but the journey covered t least two probablym ore genrations which put put Joseph in Egpyt as apeson of note prior top the HYksos invasion sparked by the Thera eruption.
My problem withthat is the Hykosis seem to be from somehwere around the Palestinian area, not the coasts most immediately effected by Thera or the loss of the Minoan trading and power empire.
So what drove the Hyksos to Egypt at that time?

Re: The Exodus
I wish Ally, I only wish....
I'm thinking 1628 (approx) for Thera. Maybe that's when the Hyksos (Pelasgians from Greece and it's islands, and from parts of Anatolia too, according to David Rohl as I just read today - Mycenaens?) rushed in - starting with Salatis.
Maybe Jacob and Joseph were a much earlier incursion of Asiatics/Canaanites. Where Yakub-har (Jacob) would fit, I don't really have a theory on yet.
I have been looking up one of the Plagues btw - waterways can go red as blood. It can happen after major volcanic activity. The 10 Plagues could have been remembered events that occurred over a relatively short period of time - weeks maybe - and might not be ten either, as who'd be counting but maybe storytellers later on?
I still reckon Exodus relates to the time of Ahmose, but was it the time of the Theran Eruption. My current thought is still that it occurred 80 to 110 years after Thera. (If Thera is 1628 and Ahmose around 1550-1520 approx).
NB The Yakub-har (Yakubhar) name is interesting. Maybe there was a Jacob after all, but where's Joseph? I did find an Osarsiph in Josephus - Against Apion - and it sounds kind of like that could be Joseph (Osarsiph? - ) but Josephus says that this Osarsiph changed his name to 'Moses' - but only according to a writer who Josephus is refuting in Against Apion.
Mmm.. could Joses (Joseph as in New Testament Joses for Joseph?) and Moses be the one remembered figure, mixed up with Ahmose? I am surely showing my total lack of philological know-how (or whatever the name game is called), my friend.

Re: The Exodus
Btw - and I think this is important to know - pumice from the Theran Eruption has been found in Egyptian workshops (etc?) after the time of Ahmose (down to the end of Thutmose III's reign). This suggests to me that Thera may not have happened all that long before Ahmose, maybe even at his time, as pumice would take awhile to float from Thera and wash up on Egyptian shores, or to become a trade item into Egypt. Maybe the Plagues did occur in Ahmoses's time after all. Though eighty to a hundred years would not seem too big a gap for pumice to start finding it's way into use in Egypt. If we put Thera too much further back, why not pumice coming up in earlier Egyptian settings, hmmm?

Re: The Exodus
Actually, if pumice only turns up for use after Ahmose, maybe the Bible is right and the Plagues and Exodus did occur at the same time. In the time of Moses! (Ahmose that is). But where is it in the Archeological Record? The Admonitions of Ipuwer may refer to it, and it's an XVIIIth Dynasty text (though that text may refer to events that occurred many many many years earlier, supposedly, even back to the 1st Intermediate Period --- what rubbish! That wouldn't fit my Theorizing, now would it! ) Only the Storm Stele of Ahmose suggests anything catastrophic in his time - and that is described as a storm and flood. Though if he was in Thebes when it happened, maybe that's all his scribes knew and recorded. Maybe the Eruption caused havoc in Avaris and the Nile Delta which weakened the Hyksos and allowed Ahmose to later (some time after dealing with his own problems) to invade and negotiate from a strong position for the Hyksos to pee off to Sharuhen. Mmm???? Of course, oral tales could with time (and according to tribal biases) become very muddled.

Re: The Exodus
Of course, that would mean I'd have to move Thera to about 1550 or thereabouts. Bum.

Now whilst I like Rohl and put quite a bit of store on his revised timeline myself (particulrly when you corrolate with dates from the Greeek pottery) where is he geting the Hyksos were coastal from?
All the sources I have looked at (which were following laguage stems from knwn Hyksos names and records) indicate the Palestinian area.
Why does he place them in the greek islands?
And are the Phonecians not the most likely inheriters and descendednt of the Myceans? They come form seemingly nowhere, trade extensively and sail a lot.
