I think you're making too big a deal about the historical accuracy Petty. {{{{but I guess that's what petty tyrants are supposed to do, right? Wink }}}}

There are many documented historical cases of women passing for men or boys. There are no documented cases of aliens passing for men that I know of. So there you go!

The way to do it would be to write the role as androgynous and then cast the best actor of whatever gender. You probably wouldn't even need to bring in the filters to explain things, and you'd have an added advantage that the doctor could pass either way as it served the story. What's wrong with that? All that's lost is the hunk factor.

If DW wants to remain one of the most influential TV shows in Britain that the kind of risk it will have to take. Let's ignore the view of certain areas of white, MC Britain and accept that the Doctor being something different from a white British heterosexual male wouldn't be a novelty & could actually produce some compelling thought provoking television.

''women have babies is a sexist idea!'' Petty

thats a pretty facile comment. No I mean that womens bodies deserve more respect.
Spoiler:
its because she is nothing more than a lazy cliche a sypher used to show how godlike the Doctor thinks he is.

mod edit- spoilered as this is the stuff Dave is about to watch.

I didn't read the spoiler, but I'm pretty sure I know your line of argument Petty. I also know from past discussions that Mrs Figg's objections to this are deep and visceral. You think the storyline packs a legitimate punch, Mrs Figg thinks it lands below the belt. For now I see no reason to assume you're not both right. I'm probably looking forward to seeing these episodes more than anything else you'll send me, even more than the newest Hobbit edit, just to see what all the fuss is about.... bounce

God no. He'd just play it as Russell Brand, same as everything else. And not exactly a good role model for the kids.

The BBC used to be really careful about this sort of thing- not wanting the 'Doctor' to be on the front pages of tabloids in drugs and sex scandals all the time.
But then there was a time not so long ago when they wouldnt have cast a woman who had appeared nude in a BBC adult drama in a family show - but they did with JLC. So maybe they have got less prudish, or less fearful of outraged Daily Mail readers.

The BBC have released their figures for the first half of season seven.

The first figure is the overnight viewing, the +7 figure is their estimation based on iplayer ect of how many watched altogether, and the last figure is the percent increase in viewers between the two.
Going on these figures the show is easily as popular now as it was when NuWho came back. Not bad eight years on. cheers

What Should Happen When John finds out Sherlock is still Alive
John:
Three years.
Sherlock: You hit me with a cricket bat!
John: [he snorts] Three years!
Sherlock: A cricket bat?!
John: Three years and four psychiatrists!
Sherlock: ...Four?
John: ...I kept punching them!
Sherlock: Why?
John: They said you weren't real.
