Re: star trek thread
{{ Just watched the finale to ST:Continues-
Without giving anything away that was damn near perfectly done. Had enough action for a finale and high enough stakes but was mainly a character piece and a beautiful bridge into ST The Motion Picture, giving reasons to the choices made by Kirk, Spock and McCoy that lead them to being where they are at when that film begins. Perfectly pitched in tone, fan pleasing in all the right places and ways but built off the back of a good solid emotional character piece.
Basically cant recommend watching this series enough if you are in any way a fan of ST- not all brilliant but mainly, a great tribute to the original show and a solid continuation of the original series completing the 5 year mission which really does perfectly match the feel, look and soundscape of TOS. }}}

{{{ Um, ok, not sure what to make of that idea! First he should go watch ST Continues- which proves you can still tell in the modern age good character focused, intelligent optimistic drama in scifi without constant explosions and cgi and find your audience.
No doubting Tarantino's skill at directing, but not sure what direction he would be looking to take the show in. He does have a love of nostalgia which might make him more traditional in his St outlook than might first appear to the eye.}}

Re: star trek thread
{{According to Deadline Tarantino is signed of for the next ST film- with some stipulations, chief among them that it be R rated.
Yup St is now officially dead and buried- anything official with the name Star Trek on it is lying.
First Abrams took all the meaning out of St and made it just another knuckle-head explosion fest in space, then ST: Discovery took all the optimism, hope and camaraderie out of it and turned it into a miserable version of GoT in space, and now Tarantino is going to take the decency out of it and the family viewing and turn it into blood and sex.
What any of that has to do with Rodenberry's ST, its vision or sense of hope I have no idea- and with ST Continues over that leaves, shockingly, the best and closest thing to ST left on TV- The Orville (and it and Continues are not actually ST officially).
A state of affairs as sad as it is shocking for Trek fans.}}}

Sounds like Star Trek and Tolkien fans are in the same boat!
Well, maybe the Trekkies are out in the rain and the Tolkien fans have a tarpaulin above their half, and they're probably not sharing the emergency SPAM and crackers supply so the Trekkies have to make do with soggy bread and stale malt balls.
A sad state of affairs.

I would totally watch a Middle-earth movie directed by Tarantino.

Re: star trek thread
Hey, at least Tarantino has been publicly known to be a Trekkie for a long time, unlike Abrams. Progress?
Re: star trek thread
{{{ If he was a lifelong Trekkie he ought to see the issue immediately with putting ST and R-rated together! Discovery has Klingon tit, plenty gore, is gritty, dark and miserable- what it isn't is anything that feels remotely like ST.
At its heart ST is a character driven adventure serial with a positive hopeful outlook and a belief humans can rise above their own petty instincts and shine- thats it.
But when they came to rebooting it they seem to have thought 'people like the ships, and the space stuff and Starfleet, and the tech ect so we will build it round that' missing entirely the point that all that stuff is just world building, its setting, its not content.
ST was always character based and adventure based with the adventure underlining some moral or philosophical question about life or current society that points the characters and so us towards a more optimist outlook.
It is not helped in this task by extra explosions, extra nudity, or extra violence. In fact it is undermined by those things. }}}

Re: star trek thread
I mainly just find it amusing that Tarantino will/might go from making the very first thing you see in Kill Bill a title card showing an "old Klingon proverb" to actually directing an official Star Trek movie.
He's talked about wanting to do Trek in the past (including the idea of making a feature-length version of "The City on the Edge of Forever" or "Yesterday's Enterprise") but I definitely get what you mean about the R-rating.

Re: star trek thread
Tarantino has a great respect for genre films, so I'm optimistic that he will get the feel right. the problem is that he doesn't know how to make a film that's not rated R.

Re: star trek thread
I agree with the point in general, but it needs to be pointed out that Captain Kirk NEVER missed an opportunity to rip his shirt off and show nipple or pose in bondage gear. (And what about those Orion slave girls? )
Hopeful outlook yes, but I'm pretty sure Gene Roddenberry would have boldly gone deep into the R-zone if the censors had allowed.

{{{ Despite Rodenberrys personal predilections for a pretty girl and tiny space dresses, he was quite clear in the idea that the show should appeal and be able to be watched by everyone of every age. As it should be given its themes and messages.

Good point about the sex appeal, David. I seem to remember one of the producers talking about the uncanny ability of the costume designer to create dresses that developed dramatic tension over the issue of when exactly they might fall off. It certainly kept my attention.

Re: star trek thread
Didn't get around to watching this until just now.
I think I had mentioned sometime that I was one of group of college students that Patrick Stewart talked to before he became Captain Picard (it was about 5 years before). He was speaking off the cuff just like he did above, and he was equally mesmerizing. You don't get to see him do that often, unfortunately, he's usually being led by an interviewer.
But he definitely shows his understanding of drama by the way he builds up to the announcement. When it came I had tears in my eyes. I'm hoping this series can live up to the previous ones in a way JJ Abrams never did, and in fact in a way I don't believe any did since Deep Space 9. STNG was the best of the bunch, even if the original series had the most iconic roles with the actors to fill them. I'm hoping for some new magic.
