Re: star trek thread
We finally got to see Star Trek Into Darkness today. It was bad. Like really, really bad. There was too much stupid in the film for it to be worth breaking down much, but I will say that nu!Kirk is a thoroughly unsympathetic asshole.
I won't be seeing Star Trek 3 unless someone else is paying. I'm also even more worried about Star Wars Episode VII's prospects now then I was before.

Character motivations were all over the place
Events felt disjointed and poorly thought out
Plot elements appeared out of nowhere and disappeared just as fast
Kirk is a piece of shit
The movie ignores its own rules that it made up
All of the villains' plans could have been foiled if the good guys had triple-digit IQs
The film should have ended about 10 minutes earlier than it did, but tacked on a completely meaningless final action sequence even though the characters had a far easier resolution staring them right in the face.
That said, the worst sin is that the movie was dull. The new characters weren't particularly interesting (aside from Cumbarbarian), and it felt like JJ Abrams was just going through the motions. The fact that this film comes four years after ST09 makes me wonder if he spent some of that time trying to get out of this. There was certainly very little passion on display.

My favourite bit
- Spoiler:
- is Old Spock turning up with the sole purpose of telling the audience how bad a person Khan is- like they didnt even have faith in their own film to get that across- they had to bring Nemoy in to explain it!

Re: star trek thread
I'm sorry to hear that Mrs Figg. There are actually a lot of films I'm looking forward to. Some of them are sequels or directorial follow-ups.
Man of Steel (Superman reboot, fingers crossed...)
Pacific Rim (giant robots vs monsters by the director of Pan's Labyrinth)
Elysium (second film from director of District 9)
Only God Forgives (same director and star as Drive)
The World's End (loose sequel to Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz)
Kick-Ass 2 (the first one was surprisingly good)
Gravity (from the director of the only great Harry Potter movie)
Thor 2 (probably only worth it if you liked The Avengers)
There are others as well, but none that I'm all that interested in (yet). Aside from The Hobbit, out of a sense of obligation.
One more thing: the trailer for Despicable Me 2 makes me want to watch the first one to see if it's any good.

Re: star trek thread
Harsh given you havent seen anyting of it yet, seems like hate for hates sake Mrs Figg- but Karen gets my admiration- she turned down a steady, presumably well paid gig in Greys Anatomy to take the lead in a low budget Scottish independent comedy film whose funds were partly raised through facebook- good on her I say for having some integrity in her choices, even if a romantic comedy is not something I am likely to watch or enjoy much.

I probably wont watch the film, and if I do I doubt it will be my sort of thing Mrs Figg- but nor am I going to say everything she does will be awful or wonderful just because of some personal attitude- thats seems very disengenous (and stupid).
I didnt like Rose but I didnt wish Billie Piper a terrible career because I didnt like the character she played. Thats just silly.
Rigby- Ive never seen it, but I assume she would have got a decent US audience to play to, as well as a foot in Amercian domestic TV market, and the money would probably be not bad.

Mrs Figg every comment you make about Karen Gillan is negative and degregotary, including the one on here earlier- if thats the impression I have its only been gotten from your own words, over and over and over.

I will express my opinion over and over without snide comments from you. If you dont like it, its tough. I am under no obligation to like her or praise her, and you are hypocritical enough to slag off Rose at every opportunity. so stow it.

Re: star trek thread
I slag off a charcater I dont like- I never, ever slagged off Billie Piper as a person, for her appearence or anything else relating to the actress- I dont like that no, I think its unfair and even for me, would be petty.
You are free to dislike the character of Amy as much as you please- but yeah I do find it offensive when you make personnal comments about the actress just because you didnt like a character she played in a show. And I wouldnt like it any more if it was anyone else either.
(This is exactly what I was talking about in fact of having to experience at work among women- women slagging off other women for reasons I cannot fathom nor discern, or see the purpose in)
