Re: star trek thread
I recently saw Star Trek Into Darkness, and pretty much liked it. (hard to admit). I still feel Chris Pine and Zach Quinto don't hold a candle to the originals, and Kirk should never say "Let's get that Son of a Bitch!", and Quinto shows too much emotion (I can hear him wail "This goes against everything I learned about acting!") but just as a movie it was better than many of the previous ones.
- Spoiler:
Pairing Uhuru with Spock was kind of odd, but worth it for the cute fight in the shuttle craft with Kirk going "do we have to do this now??", though it went on twice too long.

Yep, Nemoy had a definite advantage being more or less unencumbered with such concerns.

if you like mysterious and complex and reserved then watch some vintage Nimoy, from the television series. You'll swoon.

Re: star trek thread
I loved Spock purely cos he WAS logical, & didnt let emotions get in the way, made him reliable & dependable

What exactly do you mean, David? Nimoy has had a long and varied acting career both before and after Star Trek.

Though in retrospect it's still not Star Trek. No investigation of moral quandaries, no intellectual twists. An enjoyable popcorn movie.

Only at dramatically key moments. Quinto always shows a touch of irritation, etc. There shouldn't be anything except intellectual surprise until there's a true reason for him to crack.

her last name is grey and, you see, it's a pun on the foundational text "gray's anatomy", which works bc she works in a hospital

We're not going to bring up the "Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" video again are we?
When I was a kid I had two TV heros: Spock and Kwai Chang Caine.
But I always thought Nemoy's protests in "I AM NOT SPOCK" rang a bit false.
It seems clear to me that the character of Spock evolved over time to fit Nemoy's acting style and his gift of expressing a whole range of emotions with a single arched eyebrow on a stony face.

Re: star trek thread
He admitted in "I Am Spock" that he and Spock did converge. Yes, the arched eyebrow IS the character. I don't remember if Quinto ever really nailed that.

Re: star trek thread
A question for the Original Series fans:
Has anybody seen the remastered edits? How do they hold up against the originals. I'm of two minds on this.....

Wel you know me David, always ready with the crabbit- I thought they did a superbjob with the remastering- they havent added as such so much as just redone the original effects and shots in the style of the original- there arent huge sfx scenes inserted, it doesnt rub against the original footage in a jarring manner- it all works excellently in my opinion.
I highly, highly recommend them.

Re: star trek thread
Wasnt the reaction I expected to have when I sat down to watch them either, that I came out of it very, very pleased with what they had done and how well they had treated the original material, it was a bit of a shock to the ole crabbit.

Wait, how can you redo shots? Effects I get since they are added afterwards, but you can't redo a shot more than a few years later on account of McCoy shaking like a leaf, etc. So what are you talking about?

Ah, at first I thought you were making snide comments about Nimoy's acting chops, and was ready to go whupass on you, but I see you are a fan.

Re: star trek thread
Not sure what you mean Halfy- they havent redone perfomrances or some magic- they just redid the ship exterior shots and planets, particualrly planets seen from space look good.
But they are done with a great deal of care to be in the style of the original model shots.
