TRAILER! IT IS HERE!! Desolation of Smaug - Trailer! ACTUALLY HERE!!! OMG!

Honestly thought that it was an amazing trailer. I think I've been swayed back over to Jackson's side.

Little thing called CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. Obviously Tolkien hadn't yet read that chapter in his "How to write Fantasy 101" when he set about to write The Hobbit.

It took me over half an hour to buffer it, but I finally watched the trailer. I thought it was effective as a trailer for an action/adventure, and it was reassuring that I could at least recognize what almost everything was supposed to be (remember I set my expectations as low as I can).

The quality of the images is rough, really rough in some places, but there's still 6 months of production left so these images are probably only halfway between production sketches and the final print. Sort of like poster art.

I was interested to see hints of the story arc of the Mirkwood Elves that will connect the Battle of 5 Armies back to the Irish Elk. I don't know how I'll feel about it when I actually see it, but I'll be more charitable to Legolas and Tauriel if they're actually given a reasonable story to tell.

As for Smaug, I'm not impressed but I'm going to try to keep an open mind until I hear him speak and see him fly. I guess a gator/dragon is no worse than a hyena/warg. If Cumberbatch can breathe life into the alligator-head, I figure I can live with it.

Smaug actually looks like Benedict. It's like what they did with Gollum I guess?

yeah.. ally, i think his eyes looks like him.

i have faith in Benedict (after hearing neverwhere) so i think we're in for something great anyhow.

The themes in the trailer were so quintessentially Tolkien it was like the man himself had written the script!

Luke sure does look a lot like Orlando. But I think Tolkien would have wanted it that way.
