Canon pile-up and continuity management sucks for everyone, though. Especially writers. That's why I started writing semi-canon specials instead of official Needlehole sequels.

You can't be totally blase about canon though, you remembered DI Eldo's drinking habit, which was a throw-away joke at the very beginning of the first story and was then never mentioned again.

It was just a gag. I originally set out to write a comedy of sorts and so I brainstormed as many gags as I could think of that would riff on forum culture and Tolkien stuff in general, then threw it all at the wall in the hope that some of it would stick.
By the end of the first story it was already taking a turn for the more self-serious and character-oriented, for better or worse.
