Okay, explain something to me. The most excruciatingly boring show to come out of BBC is 'As Time Goes By' wasting the talents of Judy Dench and Jeffrey Palmer. I have to assume the only reason it's inflicted so incessantly on us is because it was popular over in Britain. Is this possible, or is this just the television equivalent of dumping?

Re: oi brits! non brits! whatever!
Yup its awful- and was never popular here.
I assume the thinking in inflicting it on the US is that it has two big names in it- so it must be good, and if its not good its because you dont get the sopisticated British humour but you can still pretend you do and feel smug about it.
And its not you dont get our humour, or its sophistication- we dont find it funny or sophisticated either.
You wouldnt get a tea making inspired electricity surge during its ad break thats for sure- everyone watching would be asleep or have finished killing themselves by then.

I am soothed to find you Brits found it to be so ass-bitingly boring as I did. I suspected there was this torrent of culturally delicate jokes I was missing, but apparently not. And yet, the damn thing ran for 8 years!
Then again, Home Improvement has been a huge success over here, due mainly to the average level of cretinism prevalent in the US. I have no other explanation. Hope it hasn't been exported.

Too late it has, long ago.
I'm not quite sure who watched As Time Goes by- the ageing members of the upper middle classes I suspect.
The rest of us were probably watching Blackader and Only Fools and Horses or something.

I still love "Yes Minister" as my fav British "thing" on TV, The humour & gentle sarcasm is as good today as it was then, & will probably stay great in the future.

Re: oi brits! non brits! whatever!
Best sitcom the UK ever produced in my view. And there is some strong competion to that-Porridge, Open all Hours, Only Fools and Horses, Blackadder, The Good Life, Man About the House, Butterflies, Coupling, Spaced, Black Books, Father Ted, to name but a few (and you will note no current ones).

Steptoe and Son is fanatsic, proper pathos.
Alf Garnett too. Are you being Served. Dads Army. Some Mothers do Have 'em. Sorry.
So many great sitcoms of the past- dunno whats happened in recent years- swamped by US sitcoms I suspect so they gave up trying.
