If I hadn't had it hammered home continually in the press that it had a mind blowing twist at the end I doubt I would have noticed but as it was I was on the look out for it. Bloody press! Mad

Oh I hate when that happens. Evil or Very Mad Was a bit like that when we went to see Shutter island. But it was a bit amusing to see and listen to a girl a few seats away hiding in her face in her sweater and squealing when it got scary on screen.

Fianlly got to see the first episode of Game of Thrones- please tell me it gets better, a lot better than this. The plot was like a very poor mans I Claudius miced with War of the Roses and the violence and nudity was pointlessly gratutious.
Hugely disappointed, I had such high hopes of this now I am not sure if its worth the bother watching more.

You know I felt exactly the same, I had been hugely looking forward to it and the first few episodes left me going meh!, but its a slow creeper, by the end of the first series I was hooked. The bits at the Wall are particularly good I thought, and of course Sean can for me do no wrong. The music is also cool. I did at first think all the actors seemed to be sleepwalking, with no facial expression, but surely not all of them? so maybe its one of the directors descisions, so as it doesnt end up looking like your usual histrionic fantasy epic. I think everything is underplayed for a reason. The dwarf chappy has some good lines too and he is really great in the role.

Since when is violence and nudity pointlessly gratuitous? You disappoint me Petty, your hard drinking scotshobbit credentials are looking a bit wobbly.

Love Time Team- perfect Sunday TV. My only gripe with it is given the depth of UK history they do seem to do the bloody romans an awful lot. Evil or Very Mad

In an entirely different direction, Foyle's War. Not as flashy as it's brother Sherlock, but has a quiet mastery only the BBC would have the confidence to pull off. Exquisite writing and acting, primarily from the main character played by Michael Kitchen.

He can take the single line: "Huh!.....right."
And wrap it with 10 seconds of sublime body language that's worth a whole conversation in a lesser actor's hands.

haven't found clips of it yet, will keep looking.

Have any of you Americans seen Veep? Its from the same writing team as do The Thick of It in the Uk, one of my favouritre political satires, so was wondering if their treatment of US politics was as good (and with as brilliant swearing in it Very Happy )

It looks similar in vein to the UK show. The main difference being this one seems to be about a politician who is potentially very important, a heartbeat from President, the Thick of It is about those fringe ministers who come and go and never leave a mark, except maybe a stain.

I saw a bunch of ads for it when the show started but it didn't really grab my attention. I'm sure that it's well-made since it's from HBO and they have high standards but it didn't really jump out from the rest of their programming. The ads made it look like a thinly veiled show about Sarah Palin but I don't know if that's actually the case.

Not acording to its writer Eldo- I read an interview with him and he said what it shared in common with the Thick of It, beyond its style, was that it was about the political system and its more ludicrous aspects, its about the office of the VP and the role rather than being about any particular politician- he went out of the way to say it was not about Palin and the only thing the lead had in common with Palin is they are both women.

The Thick of It was the first UK politics drama to come close to competing with Yes, Prime Minister- and I can give no higher praise that that- hence my interest in this 'sort of' US version.

I heard an extended interview with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and it sounded good enough that I put it on my list to check out some time. It sounds like the character draws more on Al Gore than Sarah Palin, with the added twist that she's a woman in a traditionally man's roll, dealing with a position that has a lot pressure but no authority. That's about all I can say.

Have you seen The Thick of it Dave?
Not sure how funny it will be if your not familar with the workings of Parliament- but really much of it is about spin, manipulaition, gaffes, incompetence and swearing, especially swearing.
This is the first episode of it. Warning contains swearing at a quality level only Scots can reach!

Just watched the first part of the BBC's latest production of Shakespeare's Richard II- one word- superb. And what a cast too. Can't recommend it highly enough- the Beeb doing what it is does best at its best.
