If I remeber right the second Mordor map pic goes withthe klast line- In Mordor where the shadows lie- so that fits surely?

Again, sorry, not sure what you mean by switched- Imoved the prologue to Shadows of the Past so th efilm only has one intro now- concenring hobbits. But the only cut from it I think was to remove Sam.

i meant in the poem u show the mordor-map twice, once woul've been enough, i don't care if it fits with the narrating.

and why did u cut off the two scowling hobbits? it just ruined the music-flow, why cut it?

But I didnt have any other visual to put under it- so would just be a blank screen. And showing it twice (althogh its a different shot) helps for new viewers Id think in assoiating Mordor with bad stuff.

I didnt cut out the scowling hobbit- I cut out the fireworks going off as it completely contradicts how Gandalf acts in the book about his fireworks and it makes him too twinkly eyed and jolly- whereas he is quite crabbit in the book, epsecially about his fireworks- even telling Frodo to guard them from young hobbits trying to nick them and that that applies to Frodo as well.

no, twice is just teaspoon-feeding them. don't need it twice. u could go black screen at "where shadows lie" or put in another shot of mordor, from e.g. rotk.

i completely disagree with u on the fireworks, yes, the big ones he wanted to keep away, but he just gave them some butterflies or something, and the scowling is great story telling, cus it's fun and cute and light and in shows us hobbits and how lighthearted they are. and besides, it destroyed the music flow, that's more important than Gandalf being grumpy or not. Remember he was humming at the beginning and he meat Frodo, he was in a good mood and he is a wizard, why not show that he has some fizz in the introduction sequense, as we don't see much of his magic.

I am not so bothered by the occasional sound jump (although I have done all I can to minimise them- it will happen when recutting already finished footage, no way round that- Id need the master sound recording to seperate them out).
And Gandalf being always happy and twinkly is one of the few things I dont like about Ian's performance- he is way to light and fluffy, especially at the start and not 'quick to anger' as he is in the book. He lacks any edge.
I cant reshoot it to make him more angry but I can edit it to make him less twinkly eyed and jolly- he's Gandalf not fecking Santa Claus.

He's rather quick to anger at times - when Sam is "trimming the verge", when Pippin asks questions outside Moria, when Pippin looks into the Palantir to name a few examples off the top of my head. Admittedly he's not quite as crabbit as Gandalf from the books, but he isn't always "light and fluffy" either

Yes but he is very light and fluffy that entire opening sequence and thats an audiences first impression of him- too much for my tastes- and the fireworks thing does contradict the book completely.

 yeah, but the change  we need to see hobbits ain't that scowling, they're merry folk who enjoy a laugh.

Now Im confused- are you complaining th ehobbits arent happy enough or that I cut out the final scowling shot of hobbits?  

Norc, what Petty is doing in his edit is trying to keep the story centered on Frodo and follow the structure of the books as much as possible. Some nice scenes sometimes get left out in the process (I won't mention my favorites), but the result is a very good telling of the story I think. You don't have to like one better than the other.

i don't know how u can not get what i mean Petty, it's perfectly clear. the hobbits should be there because it sets the tone of hobbits and the light mood of the beginning and gandalf's light mood going to a birthday party of a very old and dear friend. and the only thing the cut does is ruining the music and the flow of the scene and makes hobbit come across as very conservative (which they are) bit also quite moody (which they're not.)

i don't think it's good story telling (mind i'm only 17 minutes in) it's spoon feeding and an unnecessary cut.

Indeed David- comparnig the two shot by shot is probably not the best way to view it- so much as go with the flow and treat it like you would have the EE or something- an alternative take, to be watched on its own merits.

Im still not follownig you Norc, sorry- are you still talkng about the two scowling hobbits?- if so I dont see how they demonstarte hobbits have a 'light mood'.

And how is cutting the fireworks bit out spoon feeding- I dont get that either.

of course i am comparing it, how can i not. i compare it to the PJ movies and the book, and just that favours PJ, not the book nor that edit.

also, it might be just me, but the volume keeps changing.

I think that one is just you Norc- the volume is same as it is in the originals- I didnt alter it at all in edting save at transitons between cuts where it was necessary. (also noone else who has watched has mentioned it so I assume its not a problem for them)
