The lighting and sense of 3D is better on the second. But that thing makes even less sense in the second, if I can even say that, since there's no good sense of what it is to begin with. What is that looming structure, anyway?

First is spookier. ((And I am seeing a Pink Floyd 'The Wall' hammer-creature holding a gun. #cannotunsee ))

In the second the structure seems safer. The greenery makes it seem cosier, I think, like this is a safe haven before the cold and bare mountains. The last homely hammer. ( Wink ) The mountain and mist dominates the picture, while the building is dominating the first one and makes the building the scary place beyond the safe green.

{{Giger's design all- the alien, the face hugger, the eggs, the interiors of the alien ship, the space jockey he hand sculpted himself on set, and the ship design- all his work. The Alien head built for the suit has a real human skull in it and many of the designs incorporate real bone. Giger wanted to capture the idea it took its shape and intelligence from its host- as in Alien the host was a human he used human bones and a human skull in the design of it. }}}

I didn't know that about the alien creature, that there was a human skull hidden in there!

{{What age were you Halfy when you were introduced to Daleks?

As a very young child they terrified me- I was too young to notice their weaponry was an egg whisk and a sink plunger.
What did go into my young brain was their movement- no legs is very inhuman, Daleks, particualry in classic are almost never still too- a small thing but oddly disturbing, like they are under constant agitation, even when a group of them are just talking they tend to rock back and forth on the spot, thirdly those voices. The thing about the Daleks voice is not just that they are electronic and harsh, its that they also sound a hairsbreadth away from complete hysteria. As if being trapped forever inside the tank of a Dalek has them all on the verge of madness and insanity, and that tenuous grip on things come out in the way they scream at the universe whenever they speak.
And lastly their is their outlook- everything thats not a Dalek has to die. The idea one form of life is superior and therefore all other forms are not and so not only expendable but worthless and to be destroyed- that was my first encounter with such a philosophy and it was pretty horrific as an idea. Something you cant talk to, cant reason with, cant persuade, which shows you no pity, no mercy, has no empathy for other life, just hatred of you and a desire to exterminate you on sight base don nothing more than you are different from it.

Daleks are easy to laugh at as an adult maybe, but there is a reason they haven't changed much in over 50 years, sink plungers and all, its a design that works on all the levels it needs to if you meet them first before you are old enough to be skeptical- and then they stay with you for life- I am still disturbed by Daleks to this day!  Sofa
