Re: Oscar Watch
I dunno, I think MrCere did a reasonable job of presenting a balanced look at the Oscar situation and while he acknowledged his own biases, he didn't let it dominate the the piece. Some fanboys will always throw temper tantrums over the Oscars (the Avatar fans in January 2010 were insufferable, and especially bizarre since there was no such thing as an Avatar fan like a month earlier), but I don't see any of that in this piece.
I have only seen three of the nominated films, so I can't really comment on whether BOFA was better than any of them, but as a layman, I didn't walk out of X-Men: DOFP or GOTG thinking that it was a masterpiece of VFX work, even though I enjoyed both films and they had good craftsmanship.

I thought the work WETA did on Caesar in the most recent Apes movie blew all their previous work on Gollum out of the water. And sitting in the theater I could have sworn that the orangutan was real.

Agreed, Apes was really impressive, though I still have a soft spot for the old Prosthetics.

Yeah, I don't feel bad about it. Jackson certainly baited people by saying that he was just trying to make prequels to his film trilogy. It turns out, it was a poor artistic choice to try and make the Hobbit, a humble story, outdo Lotr which is far grander in scale.

I thought their work in the first Apes movie was pretty phenomenal already, so I'm even more intrigued by the sequel now. It is really impressive how far Weta has come since LOTR, though obviously those effects were phenomenal for their time and remained better than almost everything for a good 5-6 years after ROTK. I wonder if their current VFX will age as quickly or if CGI is around the point of reaching more or less complete photorealism.

I think these effects will hold up, well most of them at least.

Re: Oscar Watch
After the Hobbit one would think that question would be answered with a resounding no, but I guess it's less than fair to judge the movie industry as a whole on the basis of the Hobbit. Though I guess in hindsight it will be seen as the vehicle for a lot of failed technological ambition.

I thought if TH films showed anything it was how far away cgi of that type is to photo-realistic- where I think cgi works at its best is supplementing the frame- a scifi with distant buildings, ships taking of for landing,or in fantasy distant mountains, castles, cities ect- when its does it that way, in much the way classic matte painting was used I think it can be photo-realistic, but when its done like TH was it does not look at all realistic.

GOT is proof of that. its got the right balance, real stuff in the foreground, cgi in the distance.

Re: Oscar Watch
TH isn't really the best example of the cutting edge of of modern VFX. I do agree that CGI works best as a supplement, but fully CGI characters have come a long way in the past 15 years (which is not to diminish how impressive they were when they started).

As far as I can remember the only nomination the franchise got was Cinematography for HBP, I remember there was a campaign by some of the fans to get Rickman a nomination for DH2.

Hi Norc nice to see you pop in
The Oscars have an official Youtube channel, I've watched the awards before (well, part of them at least I can never sit through the entire show) on youtube, but I'm not sure if it would be posted the same day or not
https://www.youtube.com/user/Oscars
According to wiki:
The show will air simultaneously on Nine Network in Australia, Channel 7 in Belize, CTV in Canada, STAR Movies in India, RTÉ in Ireland, STAR Movies and HBO in Malaysia, SKY Movies in New Zealand, Velvet in the Philippines, HBO in Singapore, Dstv in South Africa, CCN TV6 in Trinidad and Tobago, and Sky Movies Oscars in the United Kingdom and Ireland

HP picked up a respectable number of nominations over the years. COS and OOTP were the only ones to not be nominated for anything. None of them ever won though.

I liked Rickman in DH2 but I'd have to think on it for a while if I'd rank call him one of the best of the year. His performance throughout the entire series is more than the sum of its parts, I think.
Re: Oscar Watch
for me its hard to pick out which actor in HP I would give an Oscar to. They are mostly all played by wonderful character actors, each one a classic performance, how could anyone choose between Hagrid, McGonagall, Snape, or Mr Weasley, for example. they are all equally brilliant. Its like who do you choose in LOTR, all of them being brilliant. its impossible.

Re: Oscar Watch
Orlando Bloom wasn't brilliant. He was much better in later films he did, where, granted, he was given more interesting characters.
