I have amended the list Norc and replaced the xmas story with the Pie one.
I wonder if for the ease of voting there should be links to each nominated story? What do you think?

I thought Mrs Figg was joking, until she said it again- and she seemed quite serious about it the second time- saying it had put her off folk last year.
And we do have to decide what the rules are for those who ask to be withdrawn, as its a first and there arn't any rules for it.
And as I dont want to be making all the rules up myself I asked for a discussion on what to do. I didn't think that required awaiting her return Eldo.

yeah, links could be a good idea, that way people can decide who to vote for.

I think we should lay the Figg problem aside until she's back, maybe we can persuade her otherwise.. idk.

I hope she can be persuaded otherwise Norc.
I'd rather everyone was involved and no one was on the side lines. {{And then I wouldnt have the headache of working out what to do about it either! I dont have enough buckie for this, well ok I never have enough buckie, but still.}}

I shall task Eldo with creating the links- he knows how to do them nice and neat hidden under a word- the sorceror.

Organisers apologise over Edinburgh fireworks display that almost ended in disaster

6 Nov 2012 15:51

ORGANISERS of a fireworks display have apologised for a "freak accident" which saw a rocket misfire and hit the remaining fireworks, setting them all off at the same time.

Pentland Community Centre staged its annual event last night at Oxgangs Brae in Edinburgh when the rocket ricocheted into the undetonated explosive devices near the end of the display.

The centre's management said the accident was "most regrettable" and apologised for any upset caused.

No one was seriously injured and the Scottish Ambulance Service was not called.

A young girl is understood to have suffered a minor burn to the side of her face.

And I'm sure it will go off without a hitch at the actual awards. (I need a fingers crossed emoticon).

That very question has been the matter of some debate Mrs Figg! As there is no precedent for someone opting out of the awards before. scratch
For myself I am off the opinion that people should be either in or out, no having your cake and eating it!- but this is just my lone opinion. I will go with whatever the consensus is.

Either way we were awaiting your return to the thread to make the decision. Although we were rather hoping to persuade you to fully take part (especially as without you there is no Agent Nora nominee and you cant be nominated for best graphic either, along with the other awards you were already in the runnning for).

Looks like rules haven't been formulated yet, but my opinion (if it sways the powers that be) is that if you can turn down a nomination for President yet still vote, you damn well should still be able to vote if you turn down a Forumshire nomination.

well to be honest I dont contribute stories and graphics to get votes, I do it because it gives me pleasure and I hope it gives others a laugh or a smile. But not getting votes, being honest again, does hurt my feelings, so why would I put myself through it again if I dont find it 'fun'? The build up and the red carpet and the NOTP is lots of fun, but the actual most popular bit, not so much. Over sensitive? probably. So sue me. Rolling Eyes

I sincerely hope you will reconsider Mrs Figg- the Forumshire awards are not a reflection of popularity- they never have been, its Forumshire- they are just a bit of silly fun and a way to mark another year of us all sticking together- which is why I would much prefer it if it was all inclusive.
(and on a personal note they take a bit of work, the build up stuff, the ceremony itself ect- I try to make them as entertaining and as fun as I can every year, so to have someone say they dont want to be involved does feel like a bit of a slap in the face for all the hard work- not a hard slap granted, but a slap nonetheless!)

I think you have as good a chance of a win as anyone else- especially in the creative corner section- and as the person who counts the votes every year I can assure the difference between a win and a loss is usually only a vote or two, hardly a measure of anyones popualrity- there are only a few categories with 'favourites' and this year, more than previous I would say those are less certain than ever.

ps I doubt anyone here posts creative stuff in the hope of an award- its just a creative sort of place.

Last year I felt that I contributed a lot, and some people turned up a week before the end and got an award, so me not getting an Award felt like a slap in the face, so there you have it. If its not silly fun to me why would I join in? and it is a popularity contest, if you get votes it means you are popular. Obviously you cant make yourself popular, so I would rather not know. Its probably something a few sessions on a couch with a trickcyclist could sort out, but I cant afford one, so its avoidance strategy for me. But if I cant vote I respect your wishes.

And of course it does exactly that. I hope you don't have any doubt. It should be obvious by the way we chime in. Besides the Agent Nora mysteries, I was particularly taken with the Hadron Hall story with the two voices and all the art. It was a like a weird, haunted, disjointed dream that you wake up from suddenly.

I wish you would let your stories be nominated, Mrs Figg, just for the general fun. I don't think of the "award ceremony" as a competition but as a party game and ice breaker. There's no obligation of course, but the more people who play the more fun it is for everybody.

unfortunately its human nature to want to be liked by others in ones group, and if you dont feel liked for whatever small and silly reason, its a bummer. Its my problem, I come here to let out my inner kid, and be silly and somehow when I am here I bring All of my teenage self here, the good and the bad, the terribly insecure, low self esteem and the huffy door slamming. its like I cant have one without the other. On the 'real' side of the magic mirror, my mature confident older self cringes and knows all this stuff I am feeling is a bit pathetic and immature. My teenage self craves approval and popularity, and me as I am now, says fuck that for a game of darts. So I am sorry, I am afraid you in wonderland are stuck with mini me.

Dammit Figgy, you are well loved and Forumshire just wouldn't feel the same without you. Remember the last tiem you left and expeditions were sent out to bring you back?

Getting back to statistics, votes don't count for much in this situation. Looking at the number of good stories, as Petty said I can see many getting 1 vote and then one happens to get 2 votes so there it is. If someone else pops up there will be another story with 2 votes and there'd have to be a tiebreaker. Kinda random. Can't really count it as a popularity contest.

And by small margins you can't really judge much. Our recent presidential elections have been perilously close to 50%, and people go jumping around like it's a big victory or defeat. Nonsense - the candidate is just floating along on what happens to be the current slight average whim. All pretty meaningless. I wish officeholders who won or lost would realize it and respond prudently.

Right so we are agreed then? Mrs Figg is a much loved member of our community and we all want her to take part. And wining and losing is not about popularity so much as it is a consequence of the small voting pool.

Right all we need to do now is convince Mrs Figg of that!
