Re: spot the age difference
It's almost funny when you see the pictures side by side. I didn't notice it when I first saw the movie, but they really did a shitty job with continuity in that scene. To some extent that's inevitable given the actors' ages, but they could have at least gotten Ian Holm's wig right.
Not that this is even close to the biggest problem with The Hobbit; it's just a nitpick.

Re: spot the age difference
Its not JUST a nitpick Eldo, its sloppy on the part of PJ ! I noticed it because Iain looks like my granny now.(before she died aged 79) Ofcourse its not his fault ! you cant stop aging ! we are all doing that but, PJ & team should have the brains to realise that . The continuity does not match ! Its all arse about face ! Frodo looks aged & haggard I thought. yet this happened BEFORE LOTRs ?? To many sloppy & lazy issues in this film ! waste of bloody digital ! I hope everyone was paid well, as PJ was a chunky uninspired, couldnt be bothered, "who cares,Ive got paid",Ive made my name, bored & boring, middle aged, dried out wanna-be. This film will be dead as a do-do in the future. He hasnt put enough in it to guarantee it as a classic for years down the line ! Hows THAT for crabbit ?

Re: spot the age difference
The standard Screen Actor's Guild contract says if you have a speaking line then you get listed in the credits and you get a continuing royalty from every use of the movie. That's going to be a nice monthly check for anybody who even says "Oh.."
I suspect that a lot of the reason for all the cameos of the LotR team in TH is just PJ making sure they get some compensation for any success of the prequel. If you consider that these movies are now making near-record boxoffice profits mostly because of the hard work that went into the earlier films, it does seem fair to include them.
Unfortunately it doesn't necessarily make for a better picture....

Re: spot the age difference
Frodo looked so weird that it took me out of the moment, I was so busy looking at his angular thin face and strange fright wig. I would have preferred not to see him, and Azriel is right, Older Bilbo looks like lazy continuity. The whole thing looks tired and lackluster, like the boring droning of the WC, not even talented actors could save it from being a snoozefest.

Re: spot the age difference
yep get HBO and the BBC to make a tv series, the story doesnt need super dooper special effects apart from Smaug and even the goblins could be men in costume like the orcs were in LOTR. watching GOT makes me realize that Ireland would make a perfectly acceptable Middle Earth so they dont need exotic places, Europe has plenty of places, even for Rivendell, I know of many and I will post photos to prove it.

To true Mrs Figg ! I also have seen many equally beautiful places in Europe & the UK, PJ was promoting & pushing New Zealand to the hilt with LOTRs, I dont doubt he was slipped an extra something for his efforts, (& I dont mean lembas bread either!)
