Unless you have a very, very expensive laptop its unlikely to equal the performance of a stand alone unit.
Its a size issue- laptops get to hot, not enough room for the fans and cooling sinks.
Although I will grant you a proper pc is not exactly very mobile.

I can see this being an issue for someone who does a lot of power-intensive rendering or plays a lot of PC games, but since I don't do either of those I'm more than happy with my laptop.
Only time heat has ever been an issue is watching DVDs, but my new laptop is much better with that than my old one.

you know, there are gamer-pc (for "svettgamera" as we call em, meaning.. erm. people play video games til the point of swetting, like it was real exercise, meaning they only play videogames) and you can also (if you know a thing or two) build on it, like buy stuff and put in.

Indeed Eldo- a laptop would grind to halt or melt into a puddle with a lot of the work I do on this one (which is why it took me years to be able to afford the bloody thing! 
)
Now Norc- try opening three browsers, play a youtube vid in one, post on here and on other forum, and bung a doctor who episode on a player. Open a word document to work on and open a highly intense ram heavy rendering prog like terragen 2 and bung fairly low level game (like FTL) for when you need something to do waiting on renders to finish and see what happens (thats all whats open and running right now on my pc)
If it all works fine I take it back- laptops are great- if it doesnt they are a toy!

try opening three browsers, DONE (have like eight up when i am at my most busy)
play a youtube vid in one, DONE! (playing music or just keeping them open to watch later or listening to interviews while doing homework)
post on here and on other forum, and DONE! (always posting here)
bung a doctor who episode on a player. DONE (dunno what you mean by bung, but if you mean download and/or play then done and done)
Open a word document to work on and DONE! always keep one or six word documents open (schoolwork)
open a highly intense ram heavy rendering prog like terragen 2 and what? dunno what the fuck that is..
bung fairly low level game (like FTL) FTL? well... i do have some other background programs, like some dictionaries, skype, spotify, itunes and probably a bunch of other stuff going on (paint!)
my laptop has yet to crash. (i delayed some download and it built up, but that's the only problem i've had with mine, although my friend has the same computer, with some more heavy shait like photoshop on, but idk... dunno how well treated it is, but that is like lava-warm and superslow and just a death-trap)

Well you could always download Terragen 2 demo verison- its a very high processeor high Ram use rendering program (I have 8 cores, 64Bit and it uses 97% of them to run and uses roughly 6 gig of my 8 gig RAM- I know, I neeed more RAM!)- if you dont have something equivelent the test doesnt really work.
