Trivial really, he kept saying mom instead of mum. I Twitted him and said its mum not mom, don't forget where you came from. He must of taken offence.

There are a number of reasons Eldo- to UK ears it sounds pretentous- and there is an element of pretending to be some thing you are not and as if you are ashamed of your own roots and are trying to disguise them.
UK celebs who go to Hollywood and suddenly start trying to talk like the locals are usually given short-shrift in the UK media and mocked for it.

What about Americans who use British pronunciation/spelling and expressions?

When you talk American Norc its bad- thats a bit like picking up bad habits.
When you talk English its endearing, we always like to see the foregners trying to do their best to learn a real language.

well, you'll be very pleased indeed that I am trying to my fullest to talk english. But I have a bad habit of watching a lot of bbc... so I do tend to sometimes.. talk snippets of.. english dialects. not very nice to listen to... my scottish is good though... if I repeat someone. My irish too, there was a tv-serial about film history with an irishman talking. his irish accent got kind of stuck for weeks. you'll also be pleased to hear that my dialect has the same "melody" as english, so whatever way I speak, it doesn't sound like I have a strong accent like our dear prime minister.
