Don't like RotK-to PJ. And not to sure about those pyramid shapes on the TT cover- what they then? And whilst I like the style of the FotR one it doesnt say Shire to me, mainly as it seems to be a big mud field.

I think those are pretty darn awesome! I like the repeated diamond shape, along with the rays it pulls the three designs together.

I think the pyramid shapes are supposed to be mountains. The designs clearly owe a lot of their aesthetic to PJ's film (particularly in their designs of both Orthanc and Barad-dur but I really like the art style. It gives a nice sense of continuity to each volume. It's certainly not Tolkien's art style but it seems pretty representative to me and I do like the style.

as for the book covers, its quite a pared down spartan style but its coherent with all 3 books. Its not for me but its not bad at all. FOTR reminds me of the trenches in the 1WW, dont know why. Those trees look dead to me, I expect to see barbed wire and bomb holes.

Sadly that's rather true. Although when I first watched the films at the age of about 9 years old I was absolutely terrified of Gollum. I made my brother fast forward through most of the Gollum scenes in ROTK (we weren't allowed to watch TTT at all because it was "too violent"). The funny thing is that I'd already read the entire book, so I'm not sure what bothered me so much about it. I guess I was just a wuss (but I already knew that).

I found that scene sad more than scary. I just wanted to give them both a hug & tell them that everything would be OK

The Wellington band Claude Rains got more than they bargained for when they decided to shoot their video for You Say in an old skatepark in Lower Hutt. It wasn’t long before several dwarves from The Hobbit came along to try to disrupt the proceedings.
