While doing press for his upcoming sequel to “Ghost Rider,” Nicolas Cage participated in a webchat with Empire Magazine readers. Normally, this is not the sort of thing that would stir the Tolkien community or Middle-earth News, but one of his answers has us buzzing.

Here is the webchat excerpt that aroused such curiousity:

The only reason why I tend to pass on a movie is either I don’t think I’m right for the material and can’t play it honestly, or because of time constraints with personal things in my life. There were two movies that asked me to go to Australia or New Zealand for long periods of time. One was Lord Of The Rings and one was the Matrix. But I was actively involved at that time raising my family and I couldn’t really take that time out.

Which character would he have played ?

The very thought is making me ill.
Doubt it would have been Aragorn unless he was sounded out as a replacement before Viggo got draughted in. (who was it Viggo replaced again? Surely not Cage?!- if so thank Eru he did)
Can't imagine him as Boromir, Faramir?

Viggo was a last minute replacement for someone.... Eegad! Things could have been worse!

I've got it, perfect casting really- Treebeard- he's already completely wooden! (oh I slay myself sometimes)

Oh I can't remember who they had in mind for Aragorn first, but it was a young one. And then they realized that Aragorn was 90 so they had to find a handsome grown up to play him instead.

I reckon Cage would have been Elrond, as he has that weirdness in his manner that is a bit faerie and fay. But he would have made a creepy Grima as well.

So if Cage wasn't the original Aragorn (what a thought!!) who else could he have been cast as before he turned it down?

Mmm possible Mrs Figg- hadn't thought of Elrond- he'd have been bloody awful. But isnt whats his face that played Elrond one of Pj's big list of Aussie actors- like Urban, and bloke that was Faramir and Denethor- I always asumed he cast as many near locals to NZ as possible so on that basis I'd be suprised if Cage was Elrond. Terrible bit of casting if so- much better to cast an actor surely!

yes much better to cast an actor, you still havent forgiven him for the remake of Wicker Man, have you?

For what it's worth, the original photo of Tolkien looking like that is even more mischievous looking than the drawn version.
