............. I'll write it with a c then. as in orc. make sure to include that in the dictionary statement for norked, not to be mistaken for norks meaning breasts.
Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
The Hobbit Facebook page had an interesting compilation of various versions of Gollum throughout the years. Pick your favorite.
Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
Good to see they are not offering biased by say, filling 3/4 of the page with PJ's version!

Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
Yeah, but have you seen the plot to that 1966 "adaptation" of The Hobbit?
Slag the dragon ransacked the city of Dale. Only General Thorin Oakenshield, Princess Mika and a lone guard survived, and turned to the wizard Gandalf in his tower. He pointed them to a prophecy of the dragon's death, for which they needed a Hobbit. Bilbo Baggins initially refused, but after some persuasion from Gandalf and the princess, joined the three on their quest.
Soon, they encountered two "groans", monstrous creatures that turned to trees when exposed to sunlight. Bilbo's companions were captured, but Bilbo tricked the two into a fight until the sun rose. They continued their journey, and General Oakenshield and the Princess started to appreciate their burglar. But suddenly, Bilbo disappeared. He had fallen though a crack in the mountain, and fell past the greblins into the lake of Goloom. He found Goloom's magic ring, and dashed away through the tunnels. He hid behind a rock, and allowed Goloom to overtake him so he could find his way out.
After traveling through Mirkwood Forest, Bilbo came to the Lonely Mountain. He stole the Arkenstone, crafted a bow from mining tools, and shot the Arkenstone through Slag's heart. Slag was killed, and Dale restored. Bilbo returned to Hobbiton with Princess Mika as his wife.
Can you blame Tolkien for being suspicious of film adaptations of his work?

I think Sting might be too prominent in that shot, but other than that I think it's a good poster.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
Ayup All...
Don't like it. Full stop. End of. Bilbo in the Book (Yeah, OK, its the film) would NEVER have been as 'satisfied' as the Actor looks in that picture brandishing Sting...
The only time the 'Real' Bilbo felt being Agressive and Violent was OK, was when he was killing spiders, and he felt that THEY merited being treated so, they were so Horrible. In the rest of the book, it is a very Peaceable Bilbo, Like the rest of his race, who knows 'He is only a Little Fellow' in the scheme of things, and who avoid violence at every turn, prefering, if you will, stealth. Tolkien even gets him out of having to fight and Kill at the BO5A, by having a rock hit him on the head, and him only being woken when it's all over...
This Image just isn't right for Bilbos character. Another thing PJ gets Bloody wrong ! He's no Bruce Willis ! Oh, and before you Mention it. The ONLY Hobbit that EVER Got Violent, Gollum, was twisted from his races 'Nature' by the most evil object in the world. The Ring. That's how much influence it took to twist a Hobbit.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
Deep breaths there Feanor- we dont do the name calling thing here (unless its against Odo) Norc is blunt but in her own humouress Fjordian way, its only if you take her comments completely at face value and without the humour behind them that you will get annoyed at them.
On the Bilbo thing I agree feanor, he is no warrior and warrior is the first thing this image put in my head. Its just not Bilbo.
The prominence of Sting in this poster combined with seeing Bilbo using it to defend against a goblin in the trailer has me very worried.
Bilbo's development from reluctant host to spider slayer and naming his sword Sting is a carefully constructed one by Tolkien which I fear PJ has thrown out the window in his quest fo ever more spectacle and action.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
and. then. for the war-hero bilbo thing. calm down, if you call what you saw in the trailer fighting a goblin then I wouldn't hold up too much hope for the rest of the fight secuenses. Bilbo is merely holding sting up protecting his (goregous) face rather than actually fighting back.
Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
and, Eldo! can I have Pretentious Twat as a title? please kind of marks a point in history
Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
On the Bilbo thing I did say "to defend against" the goblin, not to fight it. But even using it to defend himself is a step further than the book takes his development at this stage. He mainly uses it as a light in the goblin tunnels and as a way to know if any goblins are closeby.
Tolkien is quiet delibrate in his development of Bilbo coming out of his shell, there are very precise beats to his story and one of them is not a one on one attack by a goblin as presented in the trailer.
Given how crucial these beats are to the development of Bilbo's character I am uneasy PJ is messing with them.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
yeah, but as I said, I wouldn't worry too much about it. He's just shielding himself with it, I'm guessing some dwarf will come and save him. Probably Balin, he's been very "daddy"-like.

Bullroarer Took, who led the battle against the orcs and beheaded Golfinbul comes to mind. It also seems to me that Pippin and Merry went into combat willingly more than once. A person could also quibble about whether Gollum was technically a hobbit. I'm just saying there's room for discussion here.

Ayup David...
Nice to meet you too. I take it its illegal to upset Dorc then ? Oh dear...
I take your point about Bullroarer, But it was a One-time Invasion and you do what you gotta, yes ? Along with the Deputies fighting for and against the 'Shirrifs men', and Merry and Pippin, but they never had their essential Hobbit natures changed. which is what I was on about concerning Gollum. His past as a stoor, and almost an Outcast to start with at that. He was despised by his 'Family' and seemed to have been chosen for 'Special' treatment by his 'Loving' Grandma, if you read the Appendices, on the edges of the Gladden fields were only dim dim Memory, pricked into being by the riddle Game. (Sun on the diasies, teaching his Gramdma to suck eggs), but the poor Guy had already been Irreparably damaged.
