- I agree bluebottle. The Red Viper was one I liked for the brief time he was there.... but it was brief. Little finger does seem to have it all worked out. The Starks and Lannisters are pretty much on their knees. Looks like Tyrells and Martells are going to be playing it out in the next book which I have just started.
Let's see who else he can kill that I like.

- God, is the Cersei chapters frustrating. I think Tyrion said in the series, not sure it's in the book, that she wasn't half as smart as she thought she was.
He wasn't wrong.
Generally getting into book 4 is a bit daunting, is book 4 and 5 for all intents and purposes are one book. So that's 120 chapters to get through where none of the others were longer than 80. And that's with the story seemingly slowing down a bit as well.

- So Jaime's haircut seems anachronistic to me, I have trouble believing he's 40, and I never felt like I got enough Jaime Ceres love to believe that they were ever in love in the first place.
This was the most Jon Snow talked in one sitting I think the entire series, and it was weird hearing him monologue.
And Arya goes crazy, doesn't she. I can see it happening and that pisses me off.

Was surprised to read that the new series got an audience of 6.6 million- thats about the same as an average episode of Who in the UK and about 4 million short of a Who special.
I would have expected a bigger audience given the hype and the comparative audience size difference between UK and US.
Is 6 million a good viewing figure in the US for drama?

It apparently got higher viewing fiures than the Sopranos finale. And as far as I have gathered HBO is a cable channel with a limited audience of subscribers.
I've only heard those numbers mentioned as strong, at least.

It's on premium cable. HBO is only estimated to have 28.7 million subscribers, which is less than 10% of the US population. As such, it has far lower viewership numbers than broadcast TV in the US (which is what would be comparable to the BBC) or basic cable, which is what Breaking Bad aired on and would be comparable to something like Sky1. To get HBO, you not only have to have a cable (or satellite) subscription, you also have to pay specifically for HBO.

Yeah, I think you're right. It's major problem is that it's for all intents and purposes half a book. Leaving a lot of the more interesting characters to book five, and little happens to the ones it does include. At least as far as I've gotten which is around chapter thirtysomething. It feels very much like a stop gap thing.
I do like the Dornish chapters, they open up a whole new part of Georges world and Doran Martell is a fascinating character.
I struggle with the Cersei part though. To go through her running the country into the ground all the while making open enemies of her only real allies. Mistake upon mistake and all the while she's so satisfied about herself. Still, it's fascinating the degree it's been written from her perspective.
All in all, for those who have more interest in the characters in book five you could almost tell them to go there first as the books take place at the same time.

- Yes, the haircut stood a bit out. But I think they wanted to make a significant change from how he looked at the end of the third series.
Though I think it stood more out the lesser degree to which he seemed to have changed and given up on his previous self compared to the book. The impact of loosing his hand seem to have dissipated majorly since the last series. The only real scene that pushed in that direction was the one with his father, and I think that got more acrimonious in the book. They almost made it slightly understated. We'll see how it'll turn out during the series, I guess.
Was the moving of the meating between Tyrion and Oberyn to a brothel a bit unecessary? In the book he had the curtesy to meet Tyrion with his bannermen and the impression was made that the Lannister shamed the Dornishmen by sending Tyrion and not someone of higher stature. So that was slightly turned on it's head.
There are some slight book spoilers in this bit.- Spoiler:
And I wonder if we'll see how heavily won that fight was by Arya and Sandor. They certainly seemed to play down the fact that he was drunk and got seriously injured. So they've probably moved it forward in their story line gving it less impact.

- poor Arya has turned into a killer and I think she enjoyed getting revenge, I suppose a small girl for so long just flotsam in the tide of violence was very hard to take. She is a Stark but she is more like her mother than her father, that inner steel in the face of danger. She is gaining strength but at what cost idk. I noticed they have a new Daario Naharis, I preferred the first actor myself, this new actor lacks the slightly irritating cockyness and is more bland.

Didnt sleep last night, maybe because I saw the episode late at night it acted like a rich heavy meal before bedtime. My brain started whirring going over and over every scene trying to figure out whats going to happen next. Its good to be back in Westeros.

I will be finishing off the 1st series this weekend and starting the second. Can't get through too fast as I think some of book 4 (feast for crows) is being covered in series 4, as is a lot of books 3.

I also liked the symbolism of the Swords begining and ending. The Starks sword becoming Lannister and Arya finding her Needle.
