I think the only point of D&D is dressing up.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Well I played for more than 20 years and never dressed up once. Its not in my experience how people normally play.
You just go round a mates and have a few bevvies and play.

D&D is a table-top game. You roll lots of dice and consult charts in rulebooks and sketch out maps on graph paper and sometimes use little figurines to represent your characters. Costumes don't come into it. They'd get covered in grease-stains from the pizza that everyone's munching on, anyway.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Running out of shows to watch on Netflix, so I'm thinking of getting a HBO Nordic subscription, and after a few shows that are a bit higher on my list I'll probably start watching Game of Thrones. Then I thought, maybe I should read the books first. I haven't read anything new in ages, and some new fiction could be fun. They are huge books, though, so I'm wondering if they are as good as Harry Potter and LotR in the way that you can't put the book away and you just have to read that next chapter? If they aren't I don't think I'll have the patience to get through them. So bottom line: Are the books worth the money and the effort?

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
I found them harder to put down than anything: nearly ruined my life. As the series goes on and the story lines fragment it does become more tedious, but as you never know who GRRM is gonna kill off next you can't stop.
He doesn't have the hidden themes that Tolkien has, more about real life. Some great characters, definitely worth buying.

That's all I needed to hear, cheers Didn't want to buy five bricks if they weren't worth it. Will buy them as soon as I've finished rereading the Hobbit again

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
I found them a bit heavy going but very well written and he certainly can conjure up that world in great detail, they are books that either grab your imagination or they dont, its a question of taste. I can appreciate why people love them, but for me it was meat too rich to digest. I love the tv series though. I would try the first one and see how you get on. I just wasnt in the right mood to wade through them.

Thanks, Figg, I'll give the first one a go and see whether I like it

I think Figgs is right on target. Either they grab you or they'll weigh you down.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
The first three books are absolutely worth the the money and effort. After that I think it's a little more questionable, though I know a lot of people who still really enjoyed them. Halfy is right that it's a little more real world-esque than LOTR. If Tolkien's greatest inspirations were myths from Late Antiquity and the early middle ages, then Martin's greatest inspiration was the Wars of the Roses in the 1400s.
Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
yes its much more about wars between families, which is sometimes bloodier than wars between countries.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Word of advice from me (thought it's probably faaaar too late for that...):
I think I messed it up: reading the books after watching the series (every season three times or something like that..)
Now I always see all the faces and characters from the series in my mind while I'm reading the books. And every time something happens in the books that isn't in the series - then I don't think very much about that...
I guess, if it were the other way around (me reading the books before watching the series) that would be an outrage.
So, I think it's harder to appreciate the books the way I would have if I'd read them before watching HBO...
But that can't be helped now
By the way: did I tell anyone that I was in Harrenhal last week?
It's actually Dunluce Castle in Northern Ireland - but for me it was just Harrenhal
