Re: Religous debates and questions
Orwell wrote:Religious folk never admit they hate every other religion --- and every other sect, for that matter.
Maybe your religious folk don't...
Re: Religous debates and questions
What? No they don't! I don't take kindly to the slur, Sir! Btw our religious folk hate just as passionately and every bit as politely as yours, Sir. The Ozhobbitstani religious hater is as good at it as any American, thank you very much!

Re: Religous debates and questions
'Four British Christians who claim they lost their jobs as a result of discrimination against their beliefs are taking their cases to the European Court of Human Rights.
The cases involve:
Nadia Eweida, a Pentecostal Christian from Twickenham, south-west London, who was sent home by her employer British Airways in 2006 after refusing to remove a necklace with a cross
Devon-based nurse Shirley Chaplin, who was moved to a desk job by Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Trust Hospital for similar reasons
Gary McFarlane, a Bristol relationship counsellor, who was sacked by Relate after saying on a training course he might have had a conscientious objection to giving sex therapy advice to gay couples
Registrar Lilian Ladele, who was disciplined after she refused to conduct same-sex civil partnership ceremonies in north London.
It seems likely that, whatever is decided in Strasbourg, Christians will soon have the right to wear crosses at work, but the judgement on their beliefs about homosexuality will be far-reaching.'- BBC
Now the first two cases I dont see the problem- if a Christian wants to wear a cross, a seik a turban a jew a skullcap I dont see it should matter to anyone else, employer included.
The last two cases however- the releationship councillor and the registar I am with the Court on.
If you take on a job marrying people in a country which allows same sex partnerships then you can refuse to do a part of your job- you are in the wrong job- same goes for the councillor.
I very much hope the European Court supports he UK position on those last two. Otherwise it seems to me they would be enshrining a right to discriminate into law.

Re: Religous debates and questions
Agreed on the cross thing -- if a religious person wants to wear something like that it doesn't effect anyone else and thus shouldn't bother anyone else. Refusing to do your job just because a certain group of people offends you, on the other hand.... I don't see why an employer should be expected to make exceptions for something like that and I hope the European Court upholds the decision. We've had similar cases in the US in recent years but our courts haven't sided with the religious plaintiffs in the cases I've heard of.

Re: Religous debates and questions
Christianity is over!
In all seriousness though, does it really matter? All the arguments about the exact nature of Jesus over the centuries struck me as rather odd. Isn't it the message that is important?

Re: Religous debates and questions
Is this thread blasphmeous and does that break Forumshire Law?
Besides Eldo you are thinking of Islam. Christianity is quite the opposite- the clues in the name! Typical of a male not to notice though.
Mmm, I may have to arrest you all afterall.

Re: Religous debates and questions
The Sherriff's Department had better tread carefully here. The Administration sets your jurisdiction, and more importantly, your budget!
Re: Religous debates and questions
I can take a hint Eldo- I'll be round your tower before you can say 'fiscal insertion'.

Re: Religous debates and questions
Well I'm the one wearing badge.
How about me and the girls in blue pay your Tower an unexpected and unfriendly visit?
I know you Lore Masters with your potions and charms- bound to me something breaks the law. {{And if not that can soon be remedied}}}
